Wow I never thought about in to or into. That is interesting. Hopefully we can find the answer.

As for the 10 Grammer mistakes. I love it. Copy and pasted that baby for future reference.

Thanks,

Paula

Damn me...  All these years I've thought babies were found under a Gooseberry bush, or arrived in the Doctor's black bag.  Now I find they can be copied and pasted from another source.  All these years I've been doing it wrong.

Just having a 'funny five', Paula.  It's time I was asleep ;-)

Hey, I sweated buckets for my babies (tears and blood) if you're annoyed, just think how I feel. ;)

Those ones are pretty elementary (even though I do break one or two of them occasionally).
I was caught out the other day and learned something new in the process.

Apparently it's wrong to say "Less than 500 people came to the gig"
The correct way of saying it is "Fewer than 500 people came to the gig".

You are only supposed to say 'Less than' if you are talking about a quantity, such as "I used less than an ounce of flour"

So it's Less than for a quantity and fewer than for a number.

Did everyone else know this, or have I enlightened anyone?

Hi,

I'm the co-creator of a free online grammar checker that will catch all of these errors and many more (in most contexts). The checker can be found here: www.SpellCheckPlus.com. If there are errors you'd like to see addressed for all to enjoy (or rather avoid!), please let me know and we'll do our best to take care of it. There is no cost to use the site, we only ask that you share your comments so we can continue to make improvements.

best,

terry

Into and in to. Hmmm, lemme see if I can explain it...

Into is used when referring to something--"looked into the car" or "walked into the room". One thing is verbing INTO x.
In to is used when the thoughts are separated. "I looked in to see what was going on." I" looked in" is a separate from "to see what was going on." The "to" in "in to" is like an abbreviation for "In order to."

Eye have know idea if any of that makes since butt eye tried.

Kathy and Lina-

IN & INTO = These two are quite straight forward actually. They define different states of being.

To go INTO, you simply GO IN ... and then you're TO your destination.
To be IN on the other hand requires nothing from you other than to BE.

One state requires that you journey.
The other one describes where you are at present and asks only that you BE.
Newfoundlanders have a funny saying which gives a strange use of this verbiage...

"You stay where you're at and I'll come where you're to." 'Don't know if we need to get INTO that however.
The difference between theory and practice is that in theory there isnít any - Yogi Berra

Carrie started it all about this 10 grammar mistake matter.  It's great. Well done!  And to the other contributors, I say, you've made my day.  Thanks.

What's the difference between wearing clothes and bearing clothes then?
I remember reading the latter once and thought it a strange expression.

Never heard the phrase "We come bearing gifts" then?
Whether you think you can or you think you can't your probably right.
