Meeting an agent
« on: February 28, 2006, 10:03:50 AM »
I always agonised how I would approach an agent, what to put in the covering letter and how much I would need to send.
I then had a lucky breakthrough - I met my agent at a conference.
I had been attending the Annual Writers' Conference in Wichester for about six years before I had anything published. Last year I had had a couple of non-fiction articles published and took these, together with some proposals, to the conference. In additon to lectures and workshops you can book on-to-one appointments with authors, publishers and agents who are attending. I picked with care and had two fifteen minute slots with a couple of experienced and knowledgeable agents. One was very interested and asked me to send her the material that I showed her. As we had already met the covering note was easy and she took me on.
Hope this helps others.
Here is the conference web site: http://writers-conference.com/

And to add to this there is a question 16. on the Frequently Asked Questions Board which shows how you can write a letter of introduction to an agent.   Anyone who wishes to add to this just ask me ok
