500 Words - Dark Fantasy Flash Fiction - “The Last Ogre”
« on: February 13, 2019, 09:14:44 AM »
In this story, I wanted to examine the Ogre, a race of creatures usually relegated to bad guy roles. I thought it would be interesting to have him in his survival job as a circus freak, be recruited to Fishhead for this undercover mission, and feel some redemptive and gratifying spiritual healing from it. All his life, he’d lived in the human cities as an outcast or a freak, and here he was a part of something that may have saved thekingdom. It was a sweet little story to write and I hope you like it. As always, any feedback or critique is appreciated!

THE LAST OGRE
500 Words

Bobar the Ogre walked into the hot, shadowy tent.

Outside, the afternoon crowd jeered and booed.

“BOBAR THE BONECRUNCHER!” The carnival barker outside shouted over the crowd. “HIDE YOUR CHILDREN, FOLKS! BOBAR LOVES NOTHING MORE THAN TO EAT LITTLE BOYS AND GIRLS!”

Bobar limped to a wooden stool and lowered his prodigious bulk onto it.
He looked at himself in the full-length mirror.

“Bonecruncher.” Bobar mumbled. “Bad guy.”

“Hullo?” The Halfling slipped into the tent. Bobar stood and grabbed the stool, wielding it with both giant hands. “Whoa! Easy there!”

Bobar narrowed his eyes.

“What you want?” Bobar asked. “Only freaks allowed back here.”

“Then, we’re both in good company.” The Halfling bowed. “I am ‘Fishhead’ Bitterbrine. I have need of a powerhouse such as yourself, and would like to hire your services for the afternoon, sir.”

“Bobar have job.” The Ogre pointed to his face, slathered in white greasepaint. “Bobar Bonecruncher.”

“I’ve heard.” Fishhead said. “Aren’t you tired of being the bad guy all the time? The boos of the crowd… how would you like to do good, for once? How would you like to save the king?”

Bobar lowered the stool.

“Yes.”

Fishhead smiled.

“All right.” He said. “Let’s go on an adventure.”

———————————————

“Run, Bobar!” Fishhead shouted.

Bobar dropped the heavy iron grate and ran after the Halfling.

“Where?” Bobar gasped.

“Back to the circus!” Fishhead laughed. “You did it, Bobar! You saved the king!”

—————————————————————

Bobar could trace his lineage to the ancient Orges that had once ruled the highlands, centuries before the first tribal humans settled in the grasslands.

Decades ago, he had left his clan to join humanity in their bustling cities, and he never looked back.

“Bobar did good.” Bobar The Ogre said. “Bobar save King.”

He had put on a good show. The crowd, usually crying for his blood, was chanting his name.

“BONECRUNCHER! BONECRUNCHER!”

Bobar smiled.

He picked up a bucket of water and dumped it on his head.

White greasepaint ran off his face.

Bobar gasped. His eyes bulged open.

His reflection stared back at him, mouth agape.

The flaming tip of a black sword poked through his chest.

Sllypp’naooo, Sunnovdi-Mowntnn.

A terrible face appeared in the mirror’s reflection.

The demon yanked the sword free.

Bobar groaned.

With one powerful slash, the demon severed the Ogre’s head.

—————————————————

“No!” A man in purple robes hissed from the shadows. “What if he knew something?”

Quiet, human…

The demon opened its mouth, picking up Bobar’s severed head.
A long, slimy tongue slipped inside Bobar’s ear.

The man in purple robes cringed.

The demon coiled its black tongue, frowning. It tossed Bobar’s head into the dust.

A Halfling.” The demon growled. “A Halfling, in the Market District. Find him, fool! Our legions have almost reached the castle.

The demon disappeared.

The decapitated body of the world‘s last Ogre cooled in the dust as the man in purple robes slipped out the back of the tent.

——————————————

Outside, the crowd chanted for its new hero.

“BONECRUNCHER! BONECRUNCHER! BONECRUNCHER!”

You welcome, Eli.   Does any of your heroes ever survive....?  :'(   Just one? Or is that for the final flash story in the book?
Regardless, you have great writing talent.     Jan
