This story was actually the first one I wrote for this anthology. I had a lot of fun imagining the adventures of an old man who used to be a battlemage getting swept up in an adventure with a sneaky Halfling!

In my mind Jonathon Banks (Mike from Breaking Bad) is Michal, and the Halfling, Fishhead, is the kid that plays the Flash in the DC movies.

THE OLD MAN AND THE HALFLING
500 Words

Michal pushed his cart through the muddy streets of Dravin.

“Cabbages!” The old man shouted. “Radishes! Fresh! Delicious!”

A regiment of mounted Knights rounded the corner at full gallop.

They wore the yellow and blue livery of Duke Pellington’s army.

“Make way!” The Knight at the front shouted.

Michal stepped aside, but his cart tipped over, and radishes and cabbages went flying.

The knights trampled his vegetables as they raced past.

Seconds later, the knights disappeared around the corner.

Michal sighed.

He righted his cart and gazed into the street at his ruined wares.

Michal closed his eyes.

He whispered words that were snatched up by the wind.

The turnips in the street vibrated.

“I’ll help!”

A young Halfling with a mop of curly brown hair ran past Michal and grabbed vegetables off the cobblestones.

Michal opened his eyes.

The turnips lay still.

The Halfling ran to the cart, arms full, and placed the vegetables into the back.

“Sorry, the rest are mush! See you around, old timer!”

The Halfling disappeared into the crowd.

“Hmmm.” The portly Provisions Officer tutted.

Duke Pellington‘s army mustered in the field surrounding Dravin Castle.

Officers shouted, trumpets blared, and hundreds of men and women in full battle gear lined up by regiment.

“Three silver.”

Michal scoffed. “Only three?”

The Officer shrugged. “It should be one. I’m offering three. Out of respect for you… Sir.”
Michal unloaded the vegetables.

“Fine. Three.”

———————————————

As Michal pushed the empty cart back up the path toward Dravin village, he noticed dark clouds gathering on the horizon.

There was a sour thickness to the air, a rotten chill that left a bad taste in Michal’s mouth.

“Oh, gods…” a soft voice squeaked.

It was the Halfling.

“Old man,” he said, “I’m Fishhead. Time is short, and I’ve wasted too much already just looking for you! What happened to all your vegetables?”

“I sold everything to the army.”

“No!” The Halfling crumbled. “I’m minced meat! I’m crow food! I’m a dead duck, fit to be plucked!”

“Oh, be quiet.”

Michal opened his hand and revealed a small golden ring. Upon it was the royal seal of King Darreon.

“I saw you slip it into my cart, rogue.” Michal said. “Now, why would a Halfling thief have the King’s signet ring?”

“We’ll take that.” Two large men in purple robes appeared on the path.

“Please…” the Halfling whimpered.

“Gods damn it.” Michal’s fingers traced strange symbols in the air as the men charged.

————————————————

“You’re a Wizard!?!”

The Halfling peeked out from behind the vegetable cart where he had been hiding.

“War Mage. Retired.” Michal approached the smoldering corpses. He pulled open the charred tunics, revealing the brands of coiled serpents on each man’s breast. “Why is the Church of Illumination after you?” Michal asked.

“I can explain.” The Halfling pointed. Hordes of warriors in black armor appeared over the horizon. They marched relentlessly toward Pellington’s army. “But I must get to Stormhaven! Please! The fate of the world is at stake!”
