500 Words - Dark Fantasy Flash Fiction - “Dark Meetings”

Had a lot of fun with this one. Hope you like it, but happy to hear any critique you might have!

DARK MEETINGS
500 Words

“Amazing.” Magister Lord Fairfax held aloft the sputtering torch.

He circled King Darreon, studying every detail.

Deep in the shadowy dungeons of Dravin Castle, Fairfax flashed his teeth in a predatory grin.

Armed guards wearing the purple robes of the Church of Illumination stood watch nearby.

“The hair, these liver spots. His damned scowl.” Fairfax laughed. “Well done.”

King Darreon the Fourth frowned. His grey eyes flared bright red, like two pinpricks of flame in the darkness.

The king opened his mouth, and a terrible demonic voice poured out.

In the shadows, yesss, the illusion will suffice. But, my magic will not endure the light of day, Magister. I think Vazdrachir is right, yesss. This is a fool’s gambit.

“I do not require you to think,” Fairfax presented the creature with the King’s gold signet ring. “I only require you to speak.”

The demon frowned. When it spoke, its voice perfectly mimicked King Darreon’s. “I relinquish my birthright, and the complete control of all the Human Kingdoms during this tumultuous time… to my trusted advisor, Magister Lord Fairfax.”

“Traitor!” A man in leather armor ran into the chamber.

Before the robed guards could stop him, he leapt forward and plunged a silver sword blade into the demon’s chest. It’s flesh, hair, and clothes liquefied like tar and fell to the floor in a black puddle.

Sir Malthius Calderone pulled the enchanted blade from the quivering husk of flesh and slashed sideways in time to parry a robed guard’s attack.

Fairfax dropped the torch and fled.

“Canathrine!” Sir Calderone shouted, fending off the guards. “The ring!”

Canathrine ran in and sprinted after the Magister Lord.

——————————————

Lower Marketplace was rousing itself as dawn broke.

“Where are you?” The Halfling crouched at the exit of the stinking sewage tunnel, peering into the darkness. “Bobar! Hold it up! Are you trying to smush me into jelly?”

“Yes, boss!” Over the Halfling’s shoulder, a large Ogre with a scarred face and bulbous nose grunted as he strained to keep the heavy iron grate open. “I mean, no, boss!”

“Fishhead!” She stumbled out of the shadows, trailing blood.

“Cana?” Fishhead caught her.

“I told Malthius… I’m not cut out for fieldwork.” She shuddered. Her cold skin suddenly erupted in bloody, pus-bubbling sores. Fishhead flinched.

“Oh, gods, Canathrine. What did Fairfax do to you?” He whispered.

“Nothing… compared to… what I did to him.” She coughed up a mouthful of frothy blood. She held out the king’s signet ring to the Halfling. “I’m done, Fishy. Please. Take it…”

“What?” Fishhead pushed her hand away. “No! I’m a neutral party, remember? I’m only doing this for you!”

She gasped. “Now, I’m asking you to do it for the kingdom…”

————————————————

Heavy footsteps splashed the rancid waters.

Two men in purple robes came upon Canathrine’s body.

They pushed on the heavy iron grate, but their combined weight was not enough the budge it.

One of them pointed.

A large Ogre ran into Lower Market Street, heading toward the distant circus.

Thank you, again, Jan! I’m hoping that at this point in the anthology, readers will be able to piece together various storylines to see the overall big picture. I’m very pleased that my work is able to hold your interest this far in!

Thank you! Yeah hahaha I realized the playing field was getting a little crowded at this point, time to start killing off characters, and the more the readers care for them, the better! Thanks for reading and for the feedback, as always, very appreciated!
