THE KING'S DEMONIC DILEMMA
500 Words

King Darreon clambered off his warhorse and stormed into the collapsed ruins of the ancient forest cathedral. His snow-colored hair whipped around his bearded face and perpetual frown.

Darreon entered a large antechamber.

“My liege,” Magister Lord Fairfax bowed. “Are you alone?”

“Of course not.” Darreon snapped. “My personal guard waits outside. Why are we meeting here, Fairfax? I am in the middle of fighting a war!”

“I‘ve grave news, sire.” Fairfax corrected. “Goldcrest Castle has fallen. Gerstadt’s Army is no more.”

“Damn you, wizard!” King Darreon pointed a finger laden with golden, gem-encrusted rings at Fairfax. “You assured me that Goldcrest would hold!”

“My magic reveals what may be, your highness. The probabilities are always in my favor, but…” Fairfax shrugged, “fate has a way of upsetting the foreseeable order.”

“Speak plain, Magister Lord.” Darreon said. “What are you up to?”

“The Dread Lord Vargo Duuk.” Fairfax said. “You cannot stop him, my liege.”

Darreon placed his hand upon the hilt of his sheathed sword.

“Treason!” Darreon’s voice was like thunder in the large chamber. “I will have your head, wizard! The Human Kingdoms will crush Vargo Duuk’s unwashed hordes! I will-”

You will surrender.” A giant demon stepped out of the shadows. It’s muscled skin glistened red, like blood. It gripped in its hands a flaming double-headed axe. “Surrender to me, King Darreon!

Darreon froze in place. His bladder emptied, his eyes bulged, and his mouth gaped open.

“Guards!” He stammered, his voice barely a whisper. “Guards!”

Fairfax shook his head. “You should have come alone, Sire.”

The demon’s fanged maw opened. The creature’s terrible voice assaulted Darreon’s ears once more.

Order your forces to bend the knee to the Dread Lord Vargo Duuk. Do this, and I will spare humanity.

“You.” Darreon said. “You are Vargo Duuk?”

The demon bellowed.

I am Vazdrachir! Little king, you are out of time.

In one fluid movement, King Darreon withdrew the fabled Sunblade.

Vazdrachir hissed and turned away from the magical light of the legendary sword.

“Sunblade has sent many of your kind back to the void, demon! Humanity will fight! We will prevail!”

And the first daughter?” Vazdrachir growled, cringing from Sunblade’s holy light. “The princess Chelsey. Will she fight when I come to your castle? Will she stop me from peeling the soft, pink skin from her body?

Darreon froze.

“Sire.” Fairfax softly urged. “Our Kingdom is divided. The Elves and the Dwarves have abandoned our Alliance. We have no option. Is pride worth the lives of all your people? Of the Princess?”
King Darreon glared at the terrible demon, then at his trusted advisor.

——————————————————

Sunblade was also known as Demon-Slayer, Humanity’s Hope, and Kindred’s Oath.
It was the symbol of the bond between the races, forged by master Crystalsmiths centuries earlier and given to Darreon’s ancestor, King Alevarro, during the Demon Wars.

The day he surrendered to Vazdrachir, Darreon left the fabled Sunblade behind him, lying in the dust and the darkness, broken into a thousand pieces.
