500 Words - Dark Fantasy Flash Fiction - “Wallflower”
« on: February 08, 2019, 03:27:30 PM »
Another day another story! My inspiration behind this was the thought, “what if James Bond was a knight in a fantasy setting?” He’d need to do his spy craft while operating under the guise of a knight to be able to travel freely throughout the kingdom, working for the Royal Spymaster. I had a lot of fun with this one!

WALLFLOWER
500 Words

Canathrine hoisted the heavy bucket down the hill, careful not to let its foul contents spill.

Soldiers were drilling nearby.

“Girl!” One soldier shouted: a tall man with a red beard plaited like a Dwarf’s. “When you’re done servicing the Major, I’ve iron in sore need of a polish!”

The others laughed.

Canathrine’s cheeks burned as she emptied the bucket and hurried back up the hill.

“Wine.” The Major didn’t look up from his table when Canathrine entered the tent. “Two glasses.”

Canathrine scurried to the serving cart.

A knight in full armor stood in front of the Major. His eyes followed her every movement.

“Sir Malthius Calderone.” Major Strumpf said, marking the large map on the table with a charcoal pen. “This is grave news. I appreciate your riding all the way from Goldcrest to update me. But why didn’t Lord Korliss just send a messenger?”

“I actually have a favor to ask, Major.” Sir Calderone said.

“Oh?”

“If Dravin Castle falls, many refugees will head your way.”

“Yes.”

“It would greatly please me, sir, if you could keep an eye out for my father, Michal. He keeps a farm on the outskirts.”

“Of course.” The Major smiled. “Although, you understand, the war being such as it is…”

“I understand.” Sir Calderone unclipped a heavy leather pouch from his belt. It jingled as he placed it onto the table. “To cover any necessary costs.”

The Major smiled as Canathrine brought the tray of glasses to the table.

“Michal Calderone. I will pass the name along to my men. Now, drink.” Major Strumpf gripped Canathrine’s wrist with cold, bony fingers. “Before you leave, may I offer the services of my girl here?”

Canathrine’s lip trembled and her breaths came quick and shallow. A single tear threatened to fall down her cheek, but she willed it away.

She kept her gaze on the dusty floor, not daring to look up into the piercing blue eyes of the handsome knight.

Sir Calderone smiled. “Thank you, my lord. Please, where may I enjoy her? Privately?”

————————————————————

Canathrine pulled at the strings of her blouse.

“Stop, please.” Sir Calderone said. He beckoned Canathrine close and whispered.

“Tell me. Does the Major keep a personal trunk? One that he allows no one access to?”

Canathrine nodded. “There is a footlocker beneath his bed, for which he has the only key.”

“Interesting.” Sir Calderone said. “You have seen what’s inside?”

“Books.” Canathrine whispered. “Small statues of red clay. Black candles… purple robes-”

“Enough.” Sir Calderone said. “How do you know all this?”

Canathrine bit her lip. “I used to run with Fishhead Bitterbrine. I’ve gained… certain skills from surviving on the streets.”

“So, they caught you during a job and dumped you here. A wallflower, serving your sentence. Dear girl, your talents are wasted. Why don‘t you return with me? The Royal Spymaster could use someone with your skillset.”

Canathrine blinked.

Sir Calderone smiled, then slipped on his helmet.

“Wonderful. Prepare your things. I will return shortly.”
