500 Words Dark Fantasy Flash Fiction - “Old Friends”
« on: February 05, 2019, 10:56:33 PM »
Hello again! I should’ve mentioned in my previous post that I’m compiling these stories into an anthology of flash fiction stories, each exactly 500 Words in length. Because I’m sticking to this hard limit, a lot of creative cuts have to be made to ensure that I still am able to tell a satisfying story. I hope you all enjoy what I was able to come up with!

OLD FRIENDS
500 Words

Three knights in red and black livery rode up the winding path toward a tiny cottage.

“War Mage!” The lead knight shouted.

A sombre woman opened the door as the knights clambered off their steeds.

She wiped her hands with a small cloth rag.

“Stop that gesticulating, Gwendolyn!” The lead knight pulled off his helmet, revealing a scarred and wrinkled face topped with short white hair. “I know your tricks.”

“Todrik Willamont! You old dragon!” Gwendolyn laughed. “I almost roasted you in that metal shell!”

Todrik bowed. “My lady. It has been too long. Sadly, I come bearing grim tidings of death and darkness.”

“Speak plainly, sir knight.”

“War, Gwenny.” Sir Todrik said. “The world is at war.”

“And so you’ve come to conscript me?” Gwendolyn asked. “Make me don the blood and black again?”

“Let’s talk, Gwenny. Invite us in, and-”

“The sun is warm and the water of the brook is cool and brisk. Let us sit awhile in the shade. I would hear this grave message.”

—————————————————

“How’s Philip?” Todrik asked.

“He’s well. Now, what news?”

“A Dread Lord invades from the East.” Todrik said. “He’s already taken Northwatch and Twilight Landing. He’ll be at Goldcrest Castle within the month.”

His two companions had stripped off their armor. They chatted in sweat-drenched linen underclothes.

“King Darreon has called a grand muster.” Todrik said.

“Who’s declared for him?”

“Pellington. Korliss. Gerstadt. All the Southland Lords. The Arcane Collegium claims to be neutral, but Magister Lord Fairfax is up to something.”

Gwendolyn picked a yellow flower and twirled it between her fingers.

“Fairfax.” She said. “That old schemer controls the Mage’s College?”

“His magic found you.” Todrik sighed. “Gods. It’s a mess, Gwenny. Northern savages, Orc barbarians, aberrants.”

“Aberrants?” Gwendolyn asked, moving her fingers.

“Normal folk corrupted by dark magic. Within hours, they transform into monsters. Anyone can become afflicted, and nobody knows how or why. Fairfax has ordered them all put to the sword wherever we find them. Gwendolyn, I must search your cottage.”

“Certainly.” Gwendolyn whispered.

Todrik glanced toward his two companions.

They lay on their backs, with their eyes closed.

Knife hilts protruded from their chests.

Dark red pools spread beneath them into the grass.

“Gwenny.” Todrik gasped. He pulled an ornate sword from his scabbard. “Why?”

Her fingers moved like spider legs spinning a web as she weaved her spell.

“Dear friend. I’m so sorry. Brightstar will be returned to your family, you have my word.”

————————————————————

Gwendolyn placed the bloodless knife on the kitchen counter.
She gripped the edge of the counter and sobbed.

—————————————————————

Gwendolyn opened the bedroom door.

A small child lay on the straw mattress, gently snoring.

The thin blanket could not hide his cloven hooves or bovine head.

“They came today.” Gwendolyn whispered, tracing glowing patterns in the air. Above the boy’s mutated head, the same patterns appeared. “They’ll keep coming until they find you. This is the only way I can keep you safe.”

Gwendolyn lingered a moment. Then, she was gone.

Thank you, Jan. I truly appreciate the kind feedback. I think I am beginning to really enjoy writing flash fiction! It's like pruning a bonsai tree hahaha! Write a complete story then take the pruning shears to it and see what can be cut and trimmed away to make an interesting and concise little product. I have a collection of flash fiction horror stories that I released last year: http://bit.ly/2t2pNN8 and I'm planning on putting these little fellas into an anthology for my Dark Fantasy series, once they're all cleaned up haha!

Anyway, thanks again!
