Nouns may be common or proper

A noun is a word that names.

A common noun names any one kind or class of persons, places, or things.

A proper noun names a particular person, place, or thing.

A proper noun always begins with a capital letter.

Examples: Proper Noun           Common Noun
                      California                     state
                      Alice                            girl
                      Thomas                       boy
                      India                           country
