What Adjectives Do
« on: November 18, 2018, 11:28:52 AM »
 Complex Sentences

Sentences that contain modifying clauses are called complex sentences.

Compare the following sentences:

(1) The wooden bowl stood on the
shelf.                        adjective word

(2) The bowl of wood stood on the
shelf.                        adjective phrase

(3) The bowl which was made of wood
stood on the table.          adjective clause

Adjectives and adverbs add interest to sentences.

A modifier in a sentence changes the meaning of the word modified.

An adjective is a word that modifies the meaning of a noun or a pronoun.

An adverb is a word that modifies the meaning of a verb, adjective, or another adverb.

Adjectives tell more about nouns.

example:

This is a grapefruit.

Adjectives can make the sentence tell more about the grapefruit.

This is a luscious, pink grapefruit.

Nearly all adjectives describe nouns.

Ripe, red strawberries are in that wooden box.
A big, fat boy rode on a skinny, little mule.

Some adjectives tell how many or which one. These adjectives are called limiting adjectives.

Mark has two apples and three peaches.
This orange is heavier than that grapefruit.

How parts of a sentence can change and grow in meaning.

A noun used as the subject of a sentence may have a certain meaning in a sentence and an entirely different meaning in another because of the words that are employed with it in the sentence.

Look at this sentence:
                                 The automobile runs.

The subject is automobile.

The
powerful _________automobile
new

Notice the different picture of the automobile you get when other words are added:

The
dilapidated _______automobile
old

Words which change or modify the meaning of other words are called modifiers.
Words that modify nouns are called adjectives.                                     jt
