Glacial Tension
« on: November 30, 2017, 08:01:13 AM »
I was strolling down a country lane relaxing at my ease
admiring the farmerís fields and bare autumnal trees
escaping from the madding crowds, contented on my own,
Ďtil footsteps close behind announced that I was not alone.

So could this be a farmerís lad or fellow country walker,
a lurker in the foliage or homicidal stalker?
Many minutes later though the answer grew no clearer
the footsteps, though still close behind, bizarrely drew no nearer.
Judging by their hurried pace they soon would overtake
still, despite my steady tread they trailed in my wake.

Eventually my shadower could be identified
- a lady clad in leisurewear appeared by my side
whose show of great activity and resolute expression
had no apparent bearing on her physical progression.
Around her ample quantities a sea of lycra strained
itís purpose seemed gratuitous, her pastime unexplained
but, elbows pumping rapidly, she evidently thought
this unconvincing pantomime should somehow count as  sport.

I felt a little awkwardness, unease, if truth be told
as she bobbed along beside me whilst I nonchalantly strolled.
She showed no indication she would ever overtake
and I quickly reached the limit of the small talk I could make.
I could have left her far behind but thought it might be kinder
to let her slowly pull away and halt awhile behind her.
And so to ease embarrassment I ceased my gentle pace
if only to release me from this pitiable race.

I wished her all the best and yet
she hadnít even broken sweat.
You canít stave off death
if youíre not out of breath.
Your health wonít improve
if your legs barely move.

She did look the part
and I suppose thatís a start.
To squeeze in those shorts
an achievement of sorts.
Though she didnít need to choose
such expensive running shoes.

I turned to go regretfully, abandoning my stroll
as she tottered off on tippy toes to seek some private goal.

Excellent, as always.

I can picture the lady.
My website is currently having a holiday, but will return like the $6,000,000 man.  Bigger, stronger, etc.

In the meantime, why not take pity on a starving author and visit my book sales page at

Love that sudden change of pace towards the end. There's probably a proper poetry name for it, but I'm calling it a change of pace.
