Once more unto the tunnel... UPDATE IN REPLY 7.
« on: October 31, 2017, 08:39:11 PM »
My appointment to see the specialist is being rescheduled as he wants me to have another scan, one at the cutting edge of technology.

Yes, I'm being used as a bit of a guinea pig.  I'm informed this is a very expensive procedure and they will be most upset if don't turn up.  As it says on my letter 'Considerable costs will be incurred'.

Based on the earlier scan it seems that on the face of it I'm a suitable candidate for either ultrasound treatment for the cancer or perhaps even cryo-therapy.  But, this ultra hi-tech scan, unlike the ordinary MRI scan I had recently will check that the cancer hasn't spread to the lymph nodes near my prostate.

It involves a radio-active tracer being injected as well, so, in the gallows humour fashion of my family, we are now joking about me having my bum 'nuked', with a side effect of mushroom cloud farts.  President Trump will probably threaten to impose sanctions on me ;-)

I've had a radio active shot before, a few years back when they did the whole bone scan with the gamma camera.  The more scary part, for me, is that I have to go to London for this procedure, and I hate that damned place with all its people and its tube trains etc.

So I have enlisted my little sister to be my guide through the labyrinth, because she is far more comfortable there, and to make sure I get home safely afterwards if I'm still disorientated from claustrophobia reducing sedatives etc.

I could have asked my eldest daughter, but I get a feeling little Sis was pleased to be asked.  We don't live in each others pockets, but we're close when it's needed.

The other thing we're currently laughing about is the fact that the radio-active jab stays active for a while and can sometimes trigger anti-terrorist scanners at airports and some major railway stations.  Waterloo, with the EuroStar Channel Tunnel terminal nearby, probably has this sort of scanner.  So I am advised to hang onto my hospital letter in case I trigger an alert.

I hope I won't be seen as a walking nuclear device, but I do have a beard and a cammo jacket, so...  If it does happen you can be sure I'll write it up for you ;-)

So, a train ride with Sis, probably some shameless people watching, a possible terrorist alert, and then home.  Could be a fun day out ;-)

The good news is that if the lymph nodes are clear the later prostate op is likely to be day surgery so I'll not be kept in overnight.  This is my holy grail at the moment.

Good luck with all of that mate  ;D

You may not have to write about it if you do send out alerts, you may get to read about it yourself, or better still, live to air news reports flashed across the globe.  :P

Maybe line sis up to lead you through more then one hot spot.  ;)

Best of luck, Gyppo.  I'm sure your mind's like a dodgem ride at the moment, but if you can get the appointment out of the way, hopefully you'll see a bit of clear blue water.  Day surgery sounds great: back in your own bed that night.

Fingers crossed for you.

I hope your trip is more adventure than worry. My baby sis and I were at odds our whole childhood but we turned into wonderfully close adults. My big sis ignored me as a kid and yet now, we too are close. There isn't really anything like a good sibling. I hope she's mischievous enough to take you into some busy train station. Just for the ensuing story.

Good luck with the scan, Gyppo. Fingers crossed for the best possible outcome.

Take time and enjoy the day with your sis - even if it is in the hated city. Just think of all the stories and characters you'll find along the way. ;)

My scan has been rescheduled for a fortnight's time.  There's a damn rail strike, and although British Rail say they can probably run about 60% of the timetable there was no guarantee we could get there on time.

So I phoned up and explained and they offered me another date.

Like my Dad I've never been a fan of Unions, but today I'm even more militant about it.

Ah well...

Life is a waiting game. And that pretty much sucks for an active participant.

Life is not a waiting game.  It's what happens while you're preoccupied with trivia.  It's all the goals that get scored, or don't get scored, while you're queuing at the burger bar.  It's all the best bits that other people saw but you didn't because the bloke in front of you had a big hat on.

A guy I worked with once bemoaned the fact that he was the perfect age - teens into twenties - to have enjoyed the Swinging Sixties, and it didn't happen where he lived.  Free love turned out to be quite costly, and flower power was the prerogative of the local Horticultural Society.

For similar reasons, I never came of age.  When I was 18, the age of majority was 21.  By the time I was 21, they'd shifted it back to 18.

Don't tell me life is a waiting game.  I'm still waiting to be a grown-up!
