Animal Heaven (or how many angels can dance on the head of a pin?)
Daisy, our wiener dog was first,
walked right under the tire
of a moving car.
I was five.
She bit my arm as she died.
King was next, a white Samoyed
poisoned by the neighbor.
We had three terriers named Tina
each in turn hit or disappeared.
Two parakeets caged in a draft
got pneumonia, sat wing to wing
crooned together to the end.
Even gold fish found floating, belly-up,
the list goes on--I loved them all.
Every time I cried and cried.
There's a special heaven
for animals
my mother said
Really?
I have learned to hate the easy answers
(a better place--meant to be)
but still I believe
I'll see them all again
some day.
