We're all off to a grand start, Folks.
My website is currently having a holiday, but will return like the $6,000,000 man.  Bigger, stronger, etc.

In the meantime, why not take pity on a starving author and visit my book sales page at http://stores.lulu.com/gyppo1

That we are. There's so many nice poems in this thread already. I can't wait to find out what we'll all write over the course of this month. It's going to be fun.

We had the funeral today
amongst
a mix of light rain
fallen tears
and the clumps of melting snow that thudded like dead flesh when they hit the ground
His once bright smile; a whole pack and a half of smarties
streamed their bright colours
like a rainbow down his round belly
to fill the holes where coal buttons were held
They rest within the blades of last summer's grass
disintegrating like our mood

We raised him to stand proud
raised him from a tiny snow ball
rolling through life
And he grew
how he grew
There were hardships - not gonna lie about it
The time he toppled in wind
and got the shit kicked out of him by the neighbours' hoodlum kids
But he was patched by my daughter
who had then named him Proud Bill
after a dog that always barked at her on the way to school

We're gonna miss that guy.

No. 2

Knit-wise

I measure my meditations
in skeins of yarn
knit 1, purl 2
cable right
seven, eight

slip two: regrets I let go
knit one: the knot I won’t
pass them over: three become one

a yarn-over makes a hole
that seems irreparable
but I can drop a single stitch
down many rows
and repair it

where else can you say that?

Dos

Aesthetic pictures
rendered emphatically,
interrelated phenomena
purposefully made
more inscrutable.

Sorry folks my writing's nothing to match yours, but I said I'll do it so I won't play shy  ;D Here's my second contribution.

A pink morning in spring

Thin and sharp is the air
And the pink light is young still.
The odour of damp grass
Floats over the garden,
And all the birds of the world
Sing their tune to the day.

Winter is well over.
Spring's embroidery
Sprinkles gracious colours
And sweet perfumes
For our senses
To softly awaken.

Our skin is getting
Warm again,
And our teeth crave
To sink into
Juicy strawberries
And firm cherries.

Heidi, Catherine - really good stuff.  No apologies allowed anyway. :)

Kate = I assume good, but I know nothing of knitting? Crocheting?  ::)

This thread is really getting good.

What you thought this would be:

Kate - yes, I understand it better, but dummying it down just for Moi - well, that's not necessarily an upgrade ::) ::)

I don't think it's going to be selected for the National Poetry Award either way.

Number 3

Altered Perceptions

A wet bus ride
windows fogged
and a lousy view
through road-grimed glass.

People-watching opportunities
almost nil, and darkness outside,
falling like a heavy fist,
wrapped in black mail.

Getting off into the rain,
collar up, hat pulled down,
ponytail tucked away, dry,
burrowed inside my jacket.

Just occasional raindrops
falling through a light mist,
nowhere near as bad
as the view through glass.

Dark sky and the sound of birds,
driven crazy by the street lights.
Singing like mad,
as if to greet the dawn.

Never has insanity sounded so good,
so seductively appealing.
Lifting my spirit as I nearly skip
along shallow-puddled pavements.
