NaPo! -- National Poetry Month -- Write On!
« on: March 30, 2016, 10:36:17 AM »
         Welcome to the NaPoWriMo Thread.

Everyone is invited to partake of the experience of writing a poem a day in celebration of National Poetry Month.

This thread is the daily record of our endeavor - the public journal of our journey.

(Note: For those of you born during the Truman Administration, this is the electronic equivalent of a happening.)

What to Do:

1. Commencing with the first day of April, write a poem a day - 30 poems in 30 days.

2.  Post the title of your poem in this thread.

3.  Post your poem in this thread - after a day or so you can remove the poem, but you are not required to.

4.  Encourage each other - this is for fun and getting a poem done each day is accomplishment enough - no poems are judged or graded.  We pet them behind their ears, coo, and set some warm milk out for them.

5.  Enjoy.

6.  Like last year, there's a tab started over at the Red Barren for NaPo'ers.  I'd suggest you get take-out and bring it back here.  That's my plan.  ;D

There will be door prizes daily - check with CorneliusPoe on that, as well as the hors d'oeuvres, which should have been here by now.
Other than joining the fun here at MWC, the link below has 30 other ways to celebrate National Poetry Month:

T-Shirts, decals, and propeller-beanies will go on sale later in the month.

Hors d'oeuvres sounds good right now. I'm absolutely famished after a nice bout of the flu, so I'll need all the food I can get if I'm going to be able to participate.  ;D

I am rather puzzled as to what happened to March.  Apparently there is only one day left.  It has been ticked off on my year-planner, but in my mind I was still ticking off February.  Which may be why Easter took me by surprise.

Ah well.  Sometimes, years ago, I used to lose a whole weekend.  Now it seems my sober self can lose a whole month.  Is this better or worse?

Still deciding whether or not to play this year.

Can't promise I'll still be here at the end, but I'll throw my hat into the ring.

Here's number 1.

***

Three dozen hazel nuts
selected with care
from my walking stick tree.

A bag of potting compost,
an old newspaper,
cut and rolled into tiny pots.
Biodegradable of course.

Sat in a plastic tray
soaking up moisture,
starting their long journey.

Right now it doesn't look much
but this is a hazel hedge,
a barrier against prying eyes,
and the march of time.

April First

Whose fool are you, April?
The purple martins beat you to the roost.
Even the ruby-throated hummingbirds
marched in first. Ever the jester,
you rain down slick on Lady Banks rose,
pound Carolina jasmine’s shed clothes
into the dirt. Ah, the amaryllis
has your back – phallic rise
from the corner bed.

Joking Round

'to prick your mind with poetry'
my friend's inviting smile fooled me naught
April fool me once
shame on you
for I stumbled upon phrasing and rhyme
my child-like tongue rolling over similarities and syllables
something about a red rose
and sugar and spice being a bitch
but a friend's a friend for many reasons
so here I am
my mind bleeding out words
hoping in vain
that someone would toss me a rope
or at least snap their fingers once
to keep me in tune

      April river

Leaves shine their shadow
Over the deep water,
Smell of green pebbles.

Life

the clock ticks
he sits and thinks
life must be better
than this, Oh Lord

she lights
another cigarette and
reads aloud from The Sun
a drone, a phlegmy cough

makes him realise
the hammer hidden
under the table
is a damn good idea
Just a well-read punk peasant

Going to church makes you a christian as much as standing in a garage makes you a car!
