ThunderclapSo we spent summer lying by the river,
beneath a tree for shade when it was hot
and sporadic heavy showers when it was not.
Though I s'pose the clammy heat
suffocating, saturating and wilting flowers
still on stems or threaded into chains
was as much to blame for our nakedness
as the desire to explore lust, love and hunger
-- all limbered up like the anvil clouds
waiting to applaud our performance.

Modern ThoreauA human dichotomy,
he reads poetry driving
a pick-up, hooks bream
on a line of dialog, skins
novels to their skeletons.
A misplaced metaphor,
he sears alligator on a fire
of imaginings, shoots dove
with arrows of prose,
carves venison
with a poet’s pen.
A surprise in darkness,
eyes in the woods, he casts
to the depths, reels up
a modern Thoreau.
