Hello, I'm a newbie to this site.
« on: June 02, 2015, 03:02:27 PM »
Hello. I was unsure for years whether I could call myself a writer, but I think I can. I've had two non-fiction books published and an third one self-published. Now I'm learning to write fiction, and it's a different ball game. Part of that is that are so many books, e-books, and websites to tell me how to write a good novel, and I have way too much information to use it all. I'm going to begin writing a first draft of my novel, and then use all the information to improve it to a second draft.
I write on a laptop because I'm in my 70s and my hands have tremors in them, too shaky to read my own handwriting. I use LibreOffice to write with, Scrivener to organize my books, and Createspace to self-publish. I'm proud of the look and heft of my self-published book. I formatted it in LibreOffice for Createspace. That was a learning experience, and if anyone wants to hear how I did it, I have written down the method I used and will share it if you wish.
I'm pleased to be a member of myWritersCircle and look forward to good discussions about the writing I'm doing.

Welcome to MWC, Bighead. I don't know what an average hat size would be, but sounds like you're carrying around a phenomenal brain  ;D  And I understand about information overload. If you're not careful, you can parallelize yourself trying to follow all the advice you've read about writing as you go along. For that first draft, just write.

Please take a moment to read our etiquette guidelines-

You’ll find more tips in the blue threads with the stick pin icons at the top of each board. These will help you as you learn your way around.

If you’re looking for feedback on a piece of writing, please post a few critiques for others first. It’s considered good manners and you’re more likely to get helpful advice once we get to know you a bit.

Consider entering any open flash, short story or poetry contests. They’re fun and anonymous. You’ll find them at the top of the Writing Games and Challenges board.

Should you need any help along the way, just message a moderator.

Have fun,

Laura
