'Elo 'Elo 'Elo
« on: May 28, 2015, 08:08:10 AM »
Hi,

This might be a long explanation, so if you'll bear with me... ;)

I'm Steve, most people who know me call me Spam (long story). I've been writing off and on since I was a boy, however, this is the first time I've ever been prompted to put anything in the public domain.

I'm an ex military policeman, a former special constable, and I now work as a security guard in the Staffordshire Moorlands on what used to be a mobile home park and holiday camp. It's now been taken over by a charity that runs it as sort of social experiment, housing homeless families, and asylum seeker families.

Think Heartbeat meets Benefits Street.

However, it occurs to me that in these days of police cutbacks and privatisation, I'm largely doing the job of a traditional bobby on the beat.

And there's never a dull moment. In the last twelve months I've dealt with an old lad who was so incensed by 'dog does' that he put out dog food mixed with edible glitter, and a Ukrainian feller selling bootleg vodka on the park's car boot sales.

I've written these as short vignettes, but don't know how to develop them. Perhaps a blog? I don't know. I'd be dead chuffed at any suggestions anyone cares to make.

Just wondering, since the glitter was edible, that old lad didn't commit a crime/wasn't charged, did he?

Hi

We have a thing called SACT - Security And Community Together - where members of the park security, management and community meet (like a neighbourhood watch committee). He chose to give a presentation about this complete with maps and digital photos at the meeting - and sparked a quiet riot!

However, I got tasked with liaising with the RSPCA and discovered that it's an offence under the Cruelty to Animals Act 1848 to "knowingly put out poisoned food, or feed a noxious thing or substance" to an animal, punishable by three months or a £2000 fine.

The old lad wasn't happy.

Oh, and we held him until the county mounties arrived who then cautioned him, and the management made him go and clear all his tainted Kenelmeat up.

Actually, looking at notes in my pocketbook, he was cautioned under the Animal Welfare Act and threatened with six months AND £20,000 fine.

His reaction was "WHAT! They're only bloody dogs!" It didn't do anything to win him friends or influence people!

However, I think the main thing is we live at one of those points where society's changing. The police are slowly being privatised. The movement towards social housing using rural brownfield sites and gated communities with 24 hour security means that the idea of the bobby on the beat is being swept away - and yet still remains.

My problem is that, with the stories, am I writing a police procedural? This isn't (and probably never will be) a murder mystery.

It's sort of a memoir - although I've had to change names and places to avoid enriching lawyers.

Well, you certainly have a wealth of stories at your fingertips. Puts me in mind of those James Herriot books. You could do the same sort of thing. Just remember to be compassionate so you gain empathy. I'd read them. ;D

Welcome. :)

Welcome!  Feel free to join the flash fiction contest!  It's a great way to get involved in the community and it's anonymous so no fear of embarrassment!  It just started yesterday so there's plenty of time.

I'd just like to say thanks to all the people here who've made me feel so welcome at MWC. As a bit of a rookie I'm currently working on writing a novella/novelette which I'd like to post on here for critiques.

I want to deal with several themes:
  • Police privatisation
  • Austerity and alternatives to this
  • What happens in a small community when a child goes missing[l/i]
It will be four short chapters (each less than 1500 words).

Would anyone like to read it and give me some advice to improve my style?

I'm sure you'll have some readers and most likely, some feedback. I just want to remind you there is a 2,000 word limit for posting things for critique on our review board. So I would suggest you post one chapter at a time.

In case you haven't found our posting guidelines yet, here's a link.

I deemed the advice given good and intend to follow it.

It seems that someone felt I'd strayed into sycophancy.
