Interview your Main character(s)

preferably at the beginning of your story

Another side of this of which I've seen applied is to have others interview/ask questions because, the writer often doesn't think to ask many questions. How tall, what their family background is, what their education/job experience has been/their religious belief/political beliefs - all these can play a factor in your story should the need arise, no matter what genre.

Interview With Jed (Beginning)

FG: Hello Jed,Thanks for coming.

Jed: Yea sure ok

FG: So tell us why did you really dump your GF??

Jed: (rolls eyes) She was too demanding,always wanting toknow where I was,what I was doing.High maintenance you could say,I don't miss her.

FG: I assume you were shocked when she walked in on you getting a blowjob?

Jed: (laughs) you see!! She thought we were still an item

FG: (nods head) So why did you steal that pendant?

Jed: Steal? That moron who tried to rob me deserved to get a taste of his own medicine

FG: But..now you're on the run??

Jed: Hey that's not fair! I never run from a fight! How was I supposed to know this pendant was a transporting device?!

FG: Transporting Device? tell me more about it

Jed: All I remember is falling off the tree, I have no idea how it works.

FG: details for later then.Are you giving it back?

Jed: F@ck no! if this pendant gives me powers I'm keeping it!

I've played it like that before - it's fun and interesting because it can force you to look at your character from another POV.

What is your best trait?

Fiercely loyal

What is your greatest achievement so far?

My family, staying alive.

Have you ever been in a fight?

Life's a constant fight. But yes, I can hold my own.

What are the things or traits you look for in a friend?

Honesty, strength.

What is your greatest ambition/goal in life?

To get home and live in peace.

A. Going to Earth! I heard there was a festival this week, and I really wanna check it out.

Q. Who do you love?
A. That's weird to answer. I have no sense of love, none of us do. But if it's anything like loyalty, then Taylor of course! She's the greatest.

Q. What's your favorite piece of clothing?
A. Do glasses count as a piece of clothing? No, no, no, of course not, that's an accessory . . . In that case, I'd have to go with t-shirts. Especially the ones with pictures on them, that's an awesome idea!

Q. Where do you live?
A. Right now I live in Skylus, while my training is still in progress. It's an awesome place! Not as cool as some of the stuff on Earth, but it's been my home for as long as I can remember.

Q. Who makes you laugh?
A. Kendrix! She's super funny. Sometimes I think she's been sneaking off to Earth, too. I haven't seen her in a while, but she's hilarious!

I guess ya could say I'm somewhat antisocial...I tend to use my fists more often (laughs)

A. Last chapter? (chuckle) I ain't sure what you mean by that but... okay. If you're talking books, well, I prefer a bourbon, a beer and my Ipod. If you're talking about the last chapter of my life, go pound sand.

One of the things I use is detailed character templates. Sometimes questions aren't actually applicable, but I find a firm grasp of all elements of your story--whether it is introduced in the actual work or no--is significant to how well you write it.

I've been using a template that I've found circulating all over the internet in various forms. The link below is the most complex/indepth version I've yet come across and according to the site is copyrighted, and without written consent I am only allowed to link it. So that's what I did ^__~

I highly suggest checking it out. Templates and charts are very useful in keeping continuity as well as being in full control of your story. Character Charts and a world building template are the two I've personally found extremely helpful and even crucial to certain works.

I looked at that character template--geez.     How am I supposed to figure out my character's zodiac sign? I just took a quiz and it didn't even guess MINE accurately!

Sigh. Think I'll just focus on the other questions.
