There is only one problem with that, and that is will people pay for stuff they have already seen for free. But its up to you guys.

Believe me, with the prose there is a lot of jiggery poker goes on before they hit the submission panel. Crits by pm flash back and forth and I get pm blocked.  ::)

This is because the story is really good, but perhaps they have fallen down a little on the grammar, or the logic isn't quite right. Maybe they haven't shown enough etc.

Though I don't think we had the prose workshop when we done the last one. :-\

I think the contributors would still pay to see their efforts in print, and those who visit PW would appreciate the effort so I don't think they'd be put off . . . only really die-hard poetry readers tend to wander in there, I believe. ::)

Good morning all

Interesting living in a different time zone… when I went to bed last night there were three comments on this thread (two by me) and I return to 54. I’m going to contribute to the discussion by pasting the below which was my original comment on the concept, but withheld as perhaps being too prescriptive. I think we should focus on finding a way of putting together the anthology first without getting ahead of ourselves regarding publication. If we start with the modest but satisfying goal of just putting something together for internal consumption by members/guests it’s achievable and therefore may encourage participation by the cynics. Once we have the actual anthology, its collective merit can be assessed with regard to further distribution. I believe in the organic process, things developing according to circumstance.

Paste:
An attempt to assemble an anthology as described above has been proposed and seconded.

Due to our electronic medium, many poems that perhaps deserve a wider audience slip into digital obscurity. Such an anthology could be as simple as a stapled printout or there are other possibilities, such as approaching a traditional poetry publishing house, an ebook or even a member-crowd funded publication.
These are interesting future options – but the current conundrum lies in the selection of the poems.
I think the process should be as democratic and transparent as possible – right here on this thread and should begin by member-participants agreeing on a method of selection.
Proposals for such a methodology are therefore invited at this time for further discussion and polling.

I shall attempt to outline some of the related issues which, IMHO, deserve consideration.
Firstly, the guidelines by the moderators are as follows:
The process is open to all MWC members.
etc
etc

Further, it should be acknowledged that whatever method is employed, it will be based on subjective value judgments and some degree of bias is inevitable – a comfort for those of us who are excluded from the final selection.
Other basic issues are the total number of poems and whether only one or more poems per poet.

So, just how do we do this? The most democratic way is to ask members to look at all the poems and then submit a predetermined number of selections, either as full poems, the titles and page numbers or links and then we just choose those most popularly recurring. However, I envisage this as problematic simply due to the fact that, by my calculation and time zone, there were 786 posts on RMP plus more in Workshop, Gallery and probably elsewhere. Obviously not practical to comb through all of that and such a method would doom the idea from the outset. Count me out, for one.

So, thinking caps on, please, we need a method of selection. Post your suggestions and comments on this thread and let insanity prevail until we reach consensus.

Here’s my suggie:
Instead of looking at all the poems, consider all the poets. We all read and have our favored poets, not so? Members nominate, say, 5, 10 or 15 poets each and then the most popular, say, 10, 20, or 30 poets are invited to submit what they consider their most well received, say, 6 poems from their own archives, obviously with the proviso that the poems were posted in 2013. These poems can then be re-posted at, say, daily intervals and polled for the final selection of whatever number of poems is decided upon.
In addition, anyone not making the cut can submit personal or others’ poems they consider worthwhile and perhaps we should make it mandatory that X number of these are included to give a nice spread. The nominated poets can maybe act as the selection panel for these poems.
I don’t think we should, at this stage, impose restrictions by bearing future publishing considerations in mind. If it goes in this extra-curricular direction, some sort of specialized poetry editor can always cull for size. Rather too many than too little.
Back to you lot.

I'm not really sure what you mean. You think people will be prepared to work at collating/ editing poems when they are already on the boards to view, without some sort of reward such as a physical/cyber product.

Paste:

I just want you to be aware that although it is an admiral idea and, I hope you get it all together, for the suggestions above you would NOT be covered by the MWC umbrella and any assosciation with MWC. This is because our sponsors pay for this site and have certain rights over what comes out of it and would need their permissions plus Nick for final word over what s published.

The MWC publications are purely for charity and all monies associated goes to the nominated person/ charity. These are also passed by the moderation team and our sponsors. Of course you do have the choice to go this route, but be aware of how we do things.

I'm not trying to kill your enthusiasm, but forewarn you before you bandy about ideas. Publication is a great way to go I would imagine, but you won't have the MWC endorsement.  ;)

Good luck. :)

Thanks for your input, Ma. The poems are on the board to view but scattered all over the year. I'm not interested in commercialising this for my own purposes and am not sure how that impression has been created. I'd be quite happy with a stapled printout. There are better and more experienced minds than mine that I'm sure can provide further input as to how best to proceed with this idea. As the unwitting instigator - please refer to the recent Housetop Rock post/thread on RMP by Tom10 - I've supplied my thoughts subsequent to the previous 54 comments here, some of which refer to similar publishing options outlined above. I mentioned to Heidi52 in a PM that I'm not the right person to steer this thing due to my lack of experience here and in fact, now take a back seat for that reason.
