The Best Friend
« on: October 03, 2013, 09:22:02 AM »

Nunu arrived when Perry was 10 years old.
The cheeky kitten gave the old ratter new life
Might I be so bold
to say these became the best of friends?

Perry sat on Nunu the day that he came home
Licked him from head to toe, around and up and down
He’d never held a comb
He’d never had a mum, you must understand.

Nunu darted around the house a flash of white
Perry remained under the radar, with dignity
The boring side of right
The role model of note to be followed.

Ferals, both, wild and independent, never ill
An old, not cranky Perry, at 21 yrs old
Bathed Nunu daily, still
Older Nunu stopped biting Perry’s ears.

Nunu bathed Perry before the old man passed
Which was six cold winters after we were
Sure he’d breathe his last.
Perry died quietly after, in his sleep.

Three weeks later, Nunu’s still not had a wash
Nor caught a mouse, nor purred out loud
Nor tried a short dash
From here to there, nor sat with me, nor wept.

Nunu worked hard to give me one tomorrow
Though he’d lost will and drive to live.
Surrendered to sorrow,
Gone, to find his friend at the rainbow bridge .

I doubt I’ll ever see the likes again
Though I live to 140
Where friendship transcends
Our understanding of life, rhyme and reason.

It is so touching when one pet nurses another. When we got Whiskey, frisky, mad playful pup, he knew Leah wasn't in good form and instead of bouncing around like something demented, he crept into her basket, snuggled up to granny's neck and just sat quietly guarding her. He only knew her for two days. :(

What would we do without our friends? :'(

It's the end of an era - Nunu's the last of the animals that grew with the children.

I told the vet I won't have another one. She said I most likely will. Been crying all afternoon. Perry's going was sad, but bearable. This is devastating.

Oh Jewell, don't give up. The best thing for a broken heart is to find a new love. You will never replace them, but I believe it's a tribute to our pets when we say, you were so good and I loved you so much I will do this again and give someone else a good life.

The shelters are overfilled with good kitties that need a good kitty owner like you. When you are ready.  :-*

He rallied when first receiving treatment. The vet was quite encouraged. When she came in this morning he'd taken a turn for the worse. She has never seen that response before. We both agreed he really did not want to be here by himself. :'( It's heartbreaking to know we weren't enough for him. He wanted his pal, and that was that.

Jewel, you made me cry for both you and myself and the wonderful four legged friends we miss.

It hurts, but after a time the good memories help us heal at least a little.
