Different subject, but slightly related: I have spent time going through old cemeteries and always gravitate to the oldest section - they are often the ones that give some hint of the person buried and life when they were alive.

One I visited was The Old Frio Cemetery, just west of Pearsall in the lower area of Texas.

It was overgrown with grasses (wild one) and weeds. But despite the fact I had sandals on, I worked my way through it. It was small, but so interesting.

The last two graves I came to was worth wading through all the mess. There was weather worn wooden cross at the head of each of the graves. Hand carving relayed to only informat the people at the time had to share. "Killed by the Indians" plus the month and year was carved on the first one. The second one said, "He was too" along with the same date.

I know I wrote the dates down, but can't find them right now since I want them of course.

I have a cemetery story too.  Maybe we should start a thread for unexplainable stories.

That is a good idea.

I like the old cemeteries also, Alice. You can learn a lot by looking through them. I was always intrigued by a group of graves in the same year, where obviously there was a pandemic of some sort. Small pox being one. Your inscriptions illustrate the condensed old wisdom they had. Few words, but poignant.  ;)

Do you by chance have any idea what "on attachment" means?

I visited a town historian for over three hours and I did ask her the question. She didn't know, but I'm going to the museum Wednesday and will ask her the same question.

I was able to get some plat maps of China Town and they are very interesting. Between those maps, the 1870 census, and the arrest records I should be able to pin point things. I will also go to the old courthouse Wednesday and will also post the question to them.

The plot thickens. !!!

I have the feeling you will find the answer, if not sooner, then definitely later.  :)

I've been thinking about that. Should we limit the stories to 500 words? Wouldn't that still make a humongous thread?

No, I'm waiting for Wanderer to tell us the results of his search.
