Brain, seeing as you like 'muscle-memory' you'll probably like this quote from the 1500s.  I think it applies to thought processes as well, but not always to our advantage.

'It is certain that if we work at a thing long enough, the practice makes our hands very sure in the art.'
Benvenuto_Cellini 1500 - 1571 - Goldsmith, Sculptor, and Murderer.

My website is currently having a holiday, but will return like the $6,000,000 man.  Bigger, stronger, etc.

In the meantime, why not take pity on a starving author and visit my book sales page at http://stores.lulu.com/gyppo1

I think muscle memory applies to many different activities we have performed over a long period of time.

As a kid and the only girl my age on our block, I played softball with the guys all the time. And no, I wasn't the last one picked for a team after the first few times we played.  :)

Many years later after moving here I was selling a well known cosmetic door to door. Making a delivery one day, no one answered the door at a customer's house. Hearing a lot of noise from her backyard, I walked around and found her along with several other women playing softball.

I waited until my customer had a free moment, delivered her purchase, but hung around to watch for a few minutes. Finally asked them if I could try a turn at bat, mentioning that I hadn't played since I was a teen.

I saw some grins that told me they didn't expect much and honestly, I didn't either.

The bat connected with the first pitch and if it hadn't been for the thick line of trees along the back fence, I think it would have gone over.

Immediately several of them wanted me to join their church team.

Still surprised by my hit, all I could think to say was "But I'm not Catholic."

Much of the harder piano stuff I play from memory is via muscle-memory.

Same with the guitar. You get the index finger into the chord shape and all the rest just fall into place, naturally. Weird. You get "into" the chord and you think, "how did that happen? Did I do that?" Weird. B
