help me choose
« on: March 15, 2013, 02:17:17 PM »
my 18 yr old grandson will be starting college in the fall and wants to be a writer.  i thought a nice book for summer would be appropriate.  i've been thinking of a biography of a writer.   can anyone help me choose one?   he's a constant reader...been through all the usual stuff :  adventure, sci fi,, sherlock holmes, etc. and is interested in theatre and music.  (both of his parents are writers, actors, directors, producers)

Stephen King's On Writing was excellent.  It's a good read even if you don't do horror.

“Don't be like the rest of them, darling.” ― Eudora Welty

Agree with Laura, it's the best and I've read a few.
Time to take it serious and get the job done

Not to douse this hopeful thread with reality, but your grandson is eighteen and it's his last hurrah until college? Um, I suspect he's not going to be too interested in reading since that's what's awaiting him come college.

Unless . . . ahem . . . you're bold enough to get him The Joy of Sex or The Kama Sutra. I'm guessing that would delight him, or embarrass him, even more. Just make sure it's the version with pictures.

. . .

Too honest?

hahaha, wolfe.   you don't know my grandson.  he's a really good looking young man but his main squeeze is a book.  and he's extremely goal oriented.   and he knows all about that stuff.

2par - I've read my copy of the aforementioned Stephen King book several times, so I'll throw in my vote for that too :D
It's good to laugh at yourself once in a while - why let everyone else have all the fun!

oh, and would anyone recommend Castle Waiting for my 14 yr old granddaughter?  she's very mature , also a great reader, but she wants to be an astronaut, or a veterinarian, or a song writer, or president or.....well, you get the idea.

I highly recommend Castle Waiting for your daughter. Definitely.

And, um . . . he's good-looking to boot? Well, I may not know your grandson, but I do know what's on the minds of 18-year old men. Still, let me not turn into Dr. Ruth again. ;)

Oh and welcome to The Circle.

Well done and congratulations, I bet you're so proud. The apples don't fall far from the tree. Or even the apples' apples. Bri.
