Buckles an Bruises (164 word flash-fiction)

Buckles an Bruises

“Dad, why do they give silver buckles to you rodeo cowboys?”

“They’re trophies. If a cowboys’ got one he’s a lucky buckaroo.”

“And if he has two?”

“If he’s got two, he's crazy – after all he went through to get the first one he went back for more."

"What if he has three?”

“If he has three – he’s probably been kicked in the head, heart and groin by a bull, horse and woman. And if he has four, he’s probably broke, crippled, and living in his horse trailer behind a friend’s house, bunking with a stinky ol sway-back mare and an ugly ol dog with a neckerchief for a collar.”

“How many buckles do you have?”

“One.”

“So you were lucky and not crazy?

“No, I was crazy enough to do it again. But, lucky enough to realize after your momma sold my horse, punctured my tires, flipped my haul trailer and slipped on her boots, I’d better stay home and work the ranch.”

i love it.

But sometimes - says the old performer with his own collection of aches and pains -'Sometimes a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do.'

'The Devil made me do it'.
My website is currently having a holiday, but will return like the $6,000,000 man.  Bigger, stronger, etc.

In the meantime, why not take pity on a starving author and visit my book sales page at http://stores.lulu.com/gyppo1
