MWC Olymp_Inks - Your Feedback Wanted!
« on: February 22, 2013, 05:57:04 AM »
The MWC Olymp-Inks 2013 are now over, so a very big thank you to everyone who took part in any capacity, and especially to the amazing Ma100 (Mairi), who organized the whole thing and hardly slept at all while it was on!

I will be posting a longer message about the 2013 Olymp_Inks soon, but while the event is still fresh in our minds, I did just want to ask for any feedback now. It would be great to know what you all thought of the Olymp_inks, what you liked, anything you didn't, and any suggestions for how it could be made even better next time.

Looking forward to hearing your comments!

Nick  :)

I loved the banter and camaraderie that was generated by participants and spectators during the online events. It was fun getting to know members whom you'd only come across on the RMW or RMP boards. Seeing people 'out of uniform' was refreshing. We don't really think Ma is evil, that was just part of the nonsense. ;)

I enjoyed the challenges of the writing events as many of them were areas I wouldn't normally be involved in.

Thank you MWC and Ma for a great fortnight's craic. ;D

I wasn't sure I'd be daring enough to enter some of these events before it began, but I still wanted to be a part so I told Ma I'd be a forwarder. Then between her and Sio I was conned... persuaded... I mean encouraged to have a go at some of the games :D I was forced to get over my nerves pretty quick.

I think I counted seven or so events that I ended up entering. I'll just have to spend the next year working on my times so I can give Sio a proper challenge next year in some of those word games.

Good craic for sure :D

Don't worry Distant, I plan breaking her fingers next year and Sasquatch plans a hacking technique. >:D  ::) :P

Can I ask both of you a question, did you find the Olymp-ink threads easy or hard to navigate around?

Navigation was easy enough although there were a lot of them to read for the latest updates. :)

I'm going to insure my fingers I reckon. ;D

I think a lot of the guys felt this way Distant. It's no where near as daunting when you get stuck in is it? ;)

Did no one witness the wonderful opening technical trials by Heidi and myself in the Pentathlon? How could anyone get stuff so wrong [sorry Heidi, I am an idiot at times, lucky it was a false start, eh?] ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I was hesitant to get involved initially because there was no clear description of what was involved or expected. The events weren't posted when the first announcement was made, so I had no idea of what a "writing olympic event" might involve. If you gave people a better idea of what each event involved at the same time that you're asking them to sign up as competitors, judges, and forwarders then more people might get involved sooner and more enthusiastically.

I think some people might be holding back because we writers are naturally a little bit insecure about our work. Place an insecure writer in a situation where they know that their work is going to be judged against MWC members who they know are more skilled then they are, and they might feel that there is no point in competing. Not sure there is a solution to this problem.

That is a very fair comment Gayle. Now I have to figure out a way of letting members know what might happen without giving the game away.

However, that one I will ponder on and be sure next time I will draft something of that nature. The point is to encourage not terrify.  ;)

The confidence one is a bigger issue I'm afraid and I hoped the anonymity of the games might help.

The only thing I can say is as would be and upcoming writers, the Olymp-inks can and does build confidence and readys a few to get out into the big bad writing world. Use it as a platform for your first rejection/win type thing.

No :D Just getting past that initial nervous hurdle was the key. I didn't have any problem navigating my way around the Olymp-inks threads though.

I absolutely agree with what Gayle said. I shudder to think at the other entries that were judged alongside mine in the bullseye... or the other one where you had to write a review of a book you'd read. I felt like I was writing at barely a highschool-level, compared to some of the other writers I've come across on here. And I'm sure it showed. I'm absolutely terrified of posting anything for crit, so Ma I for one did appreciate the anonymity the games offered (as I do with the short story and flash comps that I try to enter as often as I can. The main reasons I came here, after all, are to learn and practise :) ).

Would it help to have 2 categories maybe new members and seniors? Just a thought.
Time to take it serious and get the job done
