sample for next book?
« on: December 08, 2012, 11:59:06 AM »
I have a three book series that is currently being copy-edited. I plan on self-publishing on Amazon, both for Kindle and CreateSpace.

I've noticed that some authors include a sample of their next book at the end of the current one. Clearly, this is done with the hope of enticing the reader to buy the next book.

Is this a good idea?

I think you'll find the publishers do this rather than the author in most cases - it's a taster with which they hope to gain future sales.
Personally I refuse to read them even though I'll as likely as not buy the next book of any author whose work I enjoy. Why spoil the entire meal by nibbling at the starters before mealtime only to have it whisked away?

If you have all 3 ready to go, can't hurt to do it. Though I would be more inclined to put the cover art and have something like

Read the next 2 in the series

Then they can go check the sample on Amazon if they want, anyway.

I think it's done more commonly with books that will come out, not ones that are already out.
