Hi -- my character is in a second-hand junk shop looking for something he could make a profit on. I'm not happy with the action tag, but I want to describe the way you wave/rock your hands up and down when you're undecided 'comme si, comme ca' gesture.

Help appreciated.

“Er, well, actually I’m hoping to find something interesting. Nothing particular in mind.[just] Something with a little history.” He rocked his hands up and down, and crinkled his nose{he sighed and stroked his chin} as he negotiated, leaving room for leeway.[/u] “Maybe{something with a touch of mystery. I have my own stall.”
Hope this helps.

 :D :D :D :D :D

Thanks Bill and Silt. He's already done dust smearing in his search for articles that haven't been picked over in a while, and he does a bit of scratching too.

Never worry. This doesn't have to stay the way it is -- just words that can be jiggled.

Thank you all for taking the time to read and coming up with your helpful suggestions.

One day I'll find out what the damned word is though. One day . . .

Ha Ha Ha

Warning - while you were sputtering 4 new replies have been posted ..... :P I's so slow :) at typing I get these all the time :)

if you want a movement, he could just at that pause, run his finger down an old table and then look for dust.

ie

Okay, I'm just building a scene around the words you have wrote plus what you have told me. I know it has a different gesture, but I was trying to find a way to connect his movements in the shop with his emotions and yet give a setting too.

ignore freely, Sio.

"Nothing particular in mind. Something with a little . . . " his fingers traced along the grooves of an old desk, "history perhaps." Looking at their tips he wiped them against his jeans before continuing to stroll. A chest caught his eye. "Maybe a touch of mystery." He turned to her. "I have my own stall."

Wouldn't it be a real shame if something like this held you up for longer than a wee while?

Hey -- there are other ways of drawing this scene . . . make life easier for yourself, Siobhan. :D :D :D :D

I think it's like 'Jazz hands', but with palms facing downwards and paws at about chest level. ???

Some sort of conductor's 'diminuendo' signal -- with tremulous wavering ::)

I have to get a  life! ;D

When in doubt, I generally go with the simple.

Quote
His open hand rocked back and forth like he was feeling the imagined treasure.

Instead of worrying about "rocked" how about;

He rocked his hand back and forth in indecision.

I know the action you describe, I've often used it myself since I love bargains and the seller always seem to know it's time to start getting serious about dickering.  ;)

Thanks Alice and Matt. :D

It is odd it doesn't have a name and isn't listed . . . the nearest I've seen for the same sort of expression is the scales balance gesture, but that uses both hands to weigh up or down how the person feels about something. :-\

That one works for me.

How about

"He made a so-so gesture with his hand."

or

"His hand hovered indecisively in midair."

or

"He tilted his hand to the side."
