Just When You're Settled

Pizza from the freezer, wine from the off-licence, and a just-released DVD; a quiet night at home offered the key to frugal indulgence. Settled beneath a comfy throw, I wriggled and squirmed on the sofa, bashed a cushion into shape until it matched my body contours. Bliss.

Press play. Lift glass. Munch.

Leccy's cries sounded near the front door, which I ignored. I knew they'd still, until, stirred from my false security, they started up again, as urgent as before. Each bleat and whine grated on my ear. The insistent wail demanded she be fed, and soon.

Cursing her needy yammering, I increased the volume, groaned at the disturbance and glugged my drink. Damn, but she wouldn't quieten. My brow furrowed when I bothered to wonder why I had deemed Leccy female truth be told, my ex-husband was more of a baby.

Unable to listen any longer I paused the movie, snatched my purse, checked for coins, counted a fiver and sighed. Having already slurped two good size glasses of wine, I couldn't drive. So, I stomped to the shops. Each step plodded my resentment and, I'll admit, my surly demeanour deserved the slow service in the newsagents.

I came back and punched the digits into Leccy's key pad. Satisfied with her top-up, the threat of the power going off disappeared along with her metred beeps.

Press play. Lift glass. Munch.

No -- My electricity is on a key pad meter, you top it up like a mobile phone by getting your card swiped at an outlet. Minimum purchase 5.00 -- which is a godsend when you're having to live on a tight budget and benefits (no big scary monthly or quarterly bills), but it can dwindle at the most inappropriate moments and then you're stuffed. ;D ;D

Electricity = leccy, 'lectric

Don't worry Skip, we Brits just don't admit it when we fail to understand Americanisms . . . makes us look clever. ::)

Glad you asked Skip because I was scratching my head  ;) Never heard of a "keypad meter," and the "leccy" totally confused me.....which is easy by the way.

Thanks for the link. Very interesting concept and I can see several uses for it here. Sure simplifies things and eliminates meter readers.

I like this. Im a Brit so I got the feeding the metre thing, nice twist, Leccy, indeed! :D The only improvement I can think of would be to name the wine, e.g Glass of Shiraz, merlot, cheap plonk? To add to the character?

Good suggestion -- thanks! ;D ;D ;D

Maybe: Pizza from the freezer, special offer Merlot from the off-licence, and a just-released DVD; a quiet night at home offered the key to frugal indulgence. :-\

Hi Sio, I liked this, but I didn't quite get this line ... maybe me being a bit thick  but I just didn't think it sounded right ...

     '... I knew they'd still, until, stirred from my false security, they started up again, as urgent as before.'

Is it me, or am I missing something?

Bobby

'they' = the beeps/whines/Leccy's cries.

Thanks for looking Bobby. ;)
