Sanctify Me

The feathers I’ve found and collected,
left behind when angels take flight,
float in places unexpected, often hospitals.
They have never brought you nearer,
but I’ll have you
my love.
You will be mine. I blow a soft breath,
the filaments waver on white fringe tips
symbols of innocence and higher things.

Perhaps the heart of a Saint
would win you over,
I could wear it on my sleeve in declaration.
No?
Then I should take yours and place it in the box
lined with velvet and dreams
which I would keep in a pouch
stringed round my neck
so it lies over my own that beats.

A Woman of God

She had nothing, home nor husband,
friends nor children.
I heard choked sobs from a narthex corner
where she hid, ashamed in rags.
Out of Christian charity
I raised her up and took her home.

That good man, my husband Thomas,
was glad to share the food
for which he worked
and the roof he provided for his family.
We all prayed together for a change in the poor woman's miserable fortune.

She stayed in our spare bedroom,
earned her keep by helping out:
took over cooking meals,
the wash and ironing and the cleaning,
meaningful looks, lingering touches,
private jokes bestowed upon my naive husband.

That scheming woman has taken over,
I've been duped by a whore and homewrecker;
something must be done.
The authorities laugh and tell me to go home.
The church, preoccupied with power and money
no longer concerns itself with evil.

I have a plan: with the sharp dagger of justice
in my right hand and in my left the pure heart of a saint,
I can become the avenging vessel to carry out
the wrath of our Lord.

Heart of A Saint #3

The heart of a Saint - it ain't worth much to anyone but Catholics;
A body part nicked from a Church - it all seems rather troublin'.
But Father Dermott had no doubts, he asked the Lord for guidance
'Cause he reckoned that the Devil was behind the raid in Dublin.

It started with an old Nirvana single and a blowtorch,
A silly bet they took too far and now they're on the telly.
The CSI turned up in droves and dusted round the altar.
Then they fingerprinted Father Ted and poor old Mrs Kelly.

The priest went on a hunger strike in protest at the outrage
But soon the Vatican were told and finally he forsook it.
The Pope proclaimed "Let's pray for Lawrence and his heart - it's tragic;
He didn't have a donor card but still they went and took it."

Heart of A Saint #4

The heart of Saint Lawrence O’Toole
was prized as a fabulous jewel
‘til a pikey one day
came and stole it away
and took it to medical school.

The fella was sly as a fox
he opened the old wooden box,
put a fresh coat of paint
on the heart of a Saint
and flogged it to one the docs.
