Day of the Baphomets by The Mars Volta

People love to hate this band because they're so pretentious, but I love it.  Every new album, every impenetrable lyric*, every unexpected sound ("did they just change drum kits in mid-song?"), every over-long guitar segment, all the surpisingly effective (and well-hidden) melodies and hooks, the epic-ness of thier songs...it's all just one big mind-**** and I love them for it.

Some lyrics:

Nova meat
The prude slit whisper
Of bovine heaps
Strapped to unearth
Of mantis flowers
Prunefingers who tug
In a zealot's shroud
I will scald supreme truth
As it touches this house
Why?

Was listening to Prelude to La Traviata earlier today, a fantastic piece of music!
"Hell? There is no heaven, there is no hell, there is only this place, the land of the dead, my friend..."

Today it's "The Queen is Dead" by the Smiths:

"she said I know you and you cannot sing;  I said that's nothing you should hear me play piano!"
"You do not need to leave your room. Remain sitting at your table and listen. Do not even listen, simply wait, be quiet still and solitary. The world will freely offer itself to you to be unmasked, it has no choice, it will roll in ecstasy at your feet." - Kafka

I don't know if I'm breaking my own rules by changing my favourite song of the day (I've finished work early today and am trying to motivate myself to clean the house by listening to music)

anyway, I'll stay with the Smiths, but am changing my vote to (edit again:  "What difference does it make") -- reminds me of what it was like to be in my teens, and not with regret!  How funny to think that, in 1984, I thought Morrissey could see into my subconscious :)

...but as I work through the album, I must ask myself, can I really choose a favourite Smiths song?  Better choose a different genre...

(euw -- now I've realised that there's one Smith's song I've never liked, and that's "please please please, let me get what I want".  rubbish.  Oh but wait, that's not the theme of this thread, is it?  I'm procrastinating with the house cleaning now, aren't I?)
