Personal Message Spam
« on: January 22, 2012, 04:10:19 AM »
We have heard from a new member that he received a PM out of the blue from another MWC member suggesting he join another writers forum. The person responsible had never posted anything on this forum.

I should like to confirm that this type of behaviour is regarded as a form of spamming and it is completely unacceptable on myWritersCircle. The member in question - Summersong - has now been banned. I am sorry if any other members have received unsolicited PMs from this person. You will not now be able to reply to them, so please just ignore and delete them.

If you receive unsolicited PMs from another MWC member that appear to be promoting some other service or website, please notify any moderator and we will take immediate action.

Thank you for your attention!

Nick  :)

What in inefficient way to spam others. And annoying, too.

Nick, when someone sends a PM to multiple people, does it count as 1 PM or is say 10 PMs if that is how many people the message is sent out to? I know there is a limit to how many can be sent within a certain amount of time, but I don't know if it is how many times you hit the send button or how many people receive the messages.

You all do a really great job of keeping the boards clean. But there are always sneaky people trying to make it bad for all of us. Keep up the good work.

One of our local political parties invited me to join facebook so I could 'like' them.  It never seems to cross their mind that opening another door just allows some of us a new way to show our displeasure.

I don't ever get spam PMs. Are yours in English or Dutch? I may need to start feeling slighted.

Maybe I've been getting your share of the spam emails Patti.  I get anywhere between 8 and 16 most every day - some days more.

Some of them are so dumb that they put Re:a (or b, c, d, etc.) in the subject line and expect me to fall for it. Others tell me I need to update my account in a bank I don't bank with - some of them are even in a different country and here I am with an expired passport.

Thankfully my spam catcher is pretty good, but I take a look at where they are from and the subject before I send them to a final resting place far from me.   ;D

I get a couple of those everyday, but I didn't think they were Facebook things. I delete them without opening.

Both. What's really bad about it, is that most often it's one of my RL best friends, and I really don't know how to make her stop it. I told her several times, really nicely, to NOT send me those shitty spam messages, but to no avail.  ::)

I don't get SPAM on Facebook or my private mail address. I used to get quite a bit when I had a Yahoo mail account. Now and then I get one on my work mail, they are usually from Nigeria telling me I am millions of pounds richer.............

I got really excited when checking my e-mail and finding I had a PM. Being new here, I thought it was nice. I read it and found it odd. But, tbh I haven't logged on since I joined (I have been too busy writing!).

I can say I have received the PM, and it did smell a bit spammy.

Needless to say, I haven't clicked on the link. Don't have a great deal of time for this forum, without placing more demands on my time elsewhere!
