I've always fancied fossicking for Opals since I read about it in a story in the  Boy's Own Paper when I was a kid.  Stories about gold, for some reason, never had the same appeal.

I had never been to the Ridge Gyp, never interested. My uncle had been there most of his adult life. I envisaged a desolate hole of a place with no real facilities and tumble weeds rolling down the main street.

It was surprise to see it was a lot more civilised than that but still very rustic. It had a nice feel, not like a gold field, of which I have seen a few.

Would be nice to have a dig around, he is always more than willing to let you do that. If you find it, you keep it.

An opal mine sounds so exotic.

I'm reading my oldest daughter A Little Princess for the 20th time, and I still love where Sara Crewe spins a tale about diamond mines in India.

They don't look as exotic as they sound thats for sure. Just holes in the ground and a lot of dust Annmarie.

I used to make speciality jewellery for H Samuel's in Banbury, one day they had a customer who wanted to sell some opals and asked if I was interested.

When I met the seller I was surprised to see a brief case sectioned off full of opals. I introduced him to someone with a lot more cash than me. Many of them were beautiful black opals.

I would love to get there one day FF. in the meantime enjoy the sun

Legend has it mate but my uncle died at a very ripe old age and a rich old man, lived a fulfilling life doing what he loved. He seemed to have a lot of good luck on his side on the whole.

I was always led to believe that the black opals were the unlucky ones.  These were of course the most rare and expensive.  Just as some famous diamonds are alleged to be cursed.  Adding a spice of danger probably just makes them all the more desirable to some people ;-)
