Congrats on publishing your work. Out of curiosity, have you thought about joining KDP Select? What are your views for/against it?

As I am in the process of preparing to publish my book on Kindle, I be interested in hearing people's thoughts on Select too. There seems to be a mixed reaction to it over on Kindleboards, where I am also a member like you, Sean, but on there I post under my actual name: Patrick Fox.  :o

Whew! You guys are fast.

Sean, I hope I didn't confuse you--Foxy, not so much ... he's used to my antics. :D

Nevertheless, I split your reply from Ken100's I have joined the kindle self publishing revolution!! thread to keep this timely discussion from being buried or going unnoticed by anyone who hadn't responded on Ken's thread.

And elsewhere. I've read pros, cons and feedback by authors who've crunched their numbers, but nothing has convinced me to go one way or the other yet.

That explains why I lost all the other replies that I knew were there.
I'm guessing that this post will keep me involved in both stories.

Just caught up with this myself.
Hmm, as the KDP select has a limited pot, to be shared out between authors, I am not so keen at the moment. Especially given the stringent restrictions that Amazon are applying as part of the conditions you have to sign up to. I particularly don't like not being able to offer my work for free on my website. For me this is an essantial part of garnering attention and getting reviews.

What do you guys think, and also, do you find the KDP forums useful?
Should I join?

Cheers,
Ken

I too have thought the 'exclusivity' clause restrictive.

Encouraging publishing on multiple platforms might be a good idea, then.
Although Amazon dominates e-books, so I don't know if that would work ...

Seems highly monopolistic to me. Means you cannot take advantage of any of the other e-readers and e-bookstores. A bit like signing up with a print publisher to have your book sold only through Waterstones! (Hi 510bhan - I see you got there first!). Mark Croker over at Smashwords (http://blog.smashwords.com/) blogged about it a couple of weeks ago. Of course, he has an axe to grind but I think he has a point.

I'm looking to publish my first ebook with Amazon in the next two to three months, and I'm on the fence about if it would make the most sense for me to join KDP or not. If I had more ebooks published already, maybe.

Do any of you think that other ebook outlets will follow suit, create their own versions of KDP?

I don't know about that, but I read an interesting comment on a post recently, where the author said he used KDP select to publicize himself.
He did this putting his Twitter, Facebook, web address, etc at the front and back of the book, encouraging people to follow him. By enrolling in KDP select, he reasoned, he could get his author platforms out there for lots of people to see and, hopefully, join, and then go back to releasing his books on multiple platforms.

Hmm. Might work...

I am still undecided about KDP Select, but I think I am edging closer to it.

I went with Select from the start. At the moment, the book is only available for the Kindle, so I don't see how it will hurt.
