I have gotten angry and frustrated with my own inability to write something that makes the earth move. I love poetry so much when I read it i want to be able to make a breathtaking piece of writing like that as well. I am a visual artist who is jealous of musicians, dancers and writers. I wish I could do it all. I am doing the best I can as I am certain a lot of us on this site are doing.

Being included in a group that has been dismissed as crap-writers might irk me a little but I've lived a long long time and been called worse. I am going to assume that Mlam is just angry---period-- and not take offense. I am certain my writing is improving. There are better writers than i on this site with much to offer me and who love poetry.  My overall experience on MWC has been a learning one. Mlam I remember the first time I posted a piece on my return to this site after a hiatus you said you wanted it to read like a poem by Bukowski. You'd never like anything I write and that's OK. (I like Bukowski BTW) As Drab said you can't please everyone with what you write. I have enjoyed the pieces you've written and like the energy of many contributors with a variety of styles and viewpoints. I hope you stay.

Honestly I couldn't believe what I was reading. To declare a writer to be 'crap' their work 'crap' - what gives a person that right?

For me, this whole thread should be locked and buried as it serves no good purpose at all.

I agree.
One persons "crap" is another persons masterpiece.
Please mods. Locks this crap up.

I suspect all this is just post Christmas Blues.

After discussion, the mods have unlocked this thread primarily because it serves a useful, if cautionary, purpose. Mark made couple of valid points, intentionally or otherwise.

Yes, it has been an uninspiring year. I suppose it all starts in politics. Most things do. It's been a crap year for politics all over the globe. He's also correct that we could all do better but hell, we knew that going in.

But Mark was talking about the poetry here in general and not a specific piece or poet. I doubt anyone really believes he comes here for inspiration. Learning, perhaps. As more than one person has pointed out, we learn from everyone, including the newbies.

This should be read as a clarion call for more people to start posting here, not fewer. We all know that diversity is good and inbreeding is bad. Look at what happened to the Pharoahs. It would be a pity if the same fate befell poets.

One person's opinion is simply that--an opinion. There is no need to, and nothing to be gained by, taking it personally. Every opinion, including this one, is a mixture of wheat and chaff. As Paul Simon once said, hear what you want to hear and disregard the rest.

Don-

I have a motto: when in doubt, go for the cheap laugh.

Wow Wow WOW

I can't believe I read that. It was the ruled upon by the mods that this thread is just an opinion and so therefore can be left as is.

Wow

It's decisions such as this that question the validity of me being a member, when another member can state that not 'their' work as being crap, but 'others' work. Politics is a very unequal comparison in the stated fashion.

again

Wow - something to think about indeed.

Sam,

Mark never singled anyone out as a crap poet, in fact you have taken that out of the heading and his post in my honest opinion was not derogatory in any way, unlike the email sent to him.  ;)

He stated he didn't get inspiration from the boards, well hell, neither do I on the prose. In fact the only inspiration I got from the actual boards for story lines was from Gyp's fighting article. Yes, it inspired me to do a fight scene I'd been scared to death of.  :o Inspiration comes from so many different things. It certainly doesn't mean that I think all the writers are crap though.

He probably could have said it in a better way, but come on, we are all here to learn not bicker on what inspires and doesn't inspire.

This wasn't posted on anyones work, nor was it posted to hurt anyone. He wanted others including himself to do better. The only rule broken here was the email sent to him and bullying is not tolerated.

Opinions don't matter a jot unless you take them personally, I have learnt from the harshest and they still give me a good kick up the arse off screen when I cock up with my writing. :'(

Everyone needs that thick skin mate. ;)

Newbies as well as oldies should know that if they feel they are unfairly treated they should report to the mods. I sometimes can be harsh and the mood I've been lately haven't thought out a comment.

The poetry boards are not exclusive, so come om you guys that know, give a hand to those that need to know. ::) :-* Just don't ask me because what I know about poetry you can write on a pin head.

I assume that means that you are staying m. I hope so.
And I agree that this should be deleted. I've posted some crap myself in the past.
P.S. You can delete your 'It's all crap' posts.  ;) If you delete yours I'll do the same, I'm sure Sparks & 5 will also.
Happy New Year m.

My posts have been deleted.

Hello everyone, I've re-read the whole thread and there seems to be confusion as to what accusations/allegations have been made.

I feel the intention of the post was to make us buck up our ideas and not be complacent. Inspired or not by what is posted here, I always find it interesting to see how people are developing their ideas and it is encouraging to see the progress different people make.

Possibly because poems are presented as completed pieces, people can become precious about their 'work' receiving negative criticism -- the whole darned thing needs rewritten, unlike a novel or even a short story which can come to life with some tweaks to address any glaring problem that reviewers point out. But, a poem doesn't require the same time investment and rewriting it or abandoning it shouldn't be devastating -- it's just that one hasn't worked [with this audience, or rather, with those who have taken the time to read and offer comment]. So, write another one, a better one, a different one. ;) ;) ;)

As publishing markets go -- poetry is a specialist niche and within each small niche there are published poems which surprise many, but that's just the nature of the thing often judged subjectively, more so than prose.

Each to his own, celebrate difference and diversity and appreciate the efforts others make, even if it's not to your own personal taste.

:D Yes drab I often wanted to delete my own crap posts, but even our bad stuff
helps us in the end.

I was surprised to see this thread unlocked when I returned to the PC.
Sure, it was okay for mark to say the forum was not up to some theoretical standard
but it was just too a sweeping generalization.  Like saying you are all crap.
I know he did not mean it that way, so I did not take offence and suggest
know one does. As I posted earlier, I consider this past year to have been
highly productive for the forum. There are lots of super poets and super poems
to be inspired from. Best year since this board was inaugurated in my opinion.

Good work from newbies and the more experienced.  This does not mean that
all poems should be considered equal. Poetry is a subjective art and we all see
from different perspectives, but it would be foolish to suppose that we need to
take an egalitarian approach to every work. Fact is skill and inspiration differ
from good to bad.  That is why we review, not to pass on just our opinion, but
to highlight the strong and weak parts of a work.

Yes, please do stick around mark and I don't mind the 'crap' remark, just don't
agree with it :D

Friendly edit >:D

Wow. I'm a newbie here, but I'm a veteran on other writing sites. I think all writers become 'stuck in the mud', when they find they are spending over 50% of their time to one site. I've been on many and left many sites, hell, I've even had the privilege of being kicked off of a few.

I also have the humble honor of running a writing project on a well-known writing site. My project has lasted over two years and has a numerous number of members...;-), it always changes. I don't know if it's appropriate to name the website of my project, so I won't.

A couple of things I've learned in the last few years on the Web-Writer-Reader-Poetry-Etc. sites is that: I will, without a doubt, get insulted to the point of an embarrassing retaliation, then I will be chastised, supported, both or ignored altogether (wisest choice, I say).

And I have found that strong words lead to strong reactions. Strong reactions lead to stronger consequences. I usually feel better when I suffer the worst consequences, but the aftereffects are long-lasting.

That is not to say that I'm a troublemaker...at least not on purpose. I'm a good soul, usually, but sometimes, I blow my top and my brain matter spews on who ever's around at the time. So please, don't take me personally...just take me honestly, and if we become friends, maybe keep one of those cheap 2 dollar umbrellas handy.

Take care, Susan
