If I Were to Say – What do You See?
« on: December 24, 2011, 08:51:47 PM »

If I were to say:

‘He rolled the thick and shaggy hide of a bull horned deer.’

What do you envision?

I envision something like a big bear rug, only a deer skin. And you are rolling it up from one end making it look like a giant fur ho-ho.

The word shaggy instantly makes me think bear too. Most deer I've seen don't tend toward shaggy.

I was trying to imagine what a Norseman hunter of the 1260's might call a buffalo.

Well, I guess I focused on the "deer" part more than the "shaggy".  Where I live, we have possibly hundreds of deer running through my property. I feed them within a few feet of my deck.

As for the shaggy in the description, I was envisioning a deer that hadn't maintained his/her hygiene very well.

Not to ask a stupid question, but why don't you just say 'buffalo'? Wisent is the European bison isn't it?

I should probably just go with:

'He rolled the shaggy hide of the Winsent then tied it over the front of his saddle.'

Wasn't sure how many folks would know what a Winsent was.

EDIT: -shaggy hide of the Zubr bull-

Off the cuff, I don't know what a Winset is. But thanks a dictionary and Google, I could easily look it up if it distracted me from following the story.

I'd imagine a creature with a shaggy hide and neither horse, cow, nor sheep has been mentioned I'd deduce a deer -- cos hey, that's what you told us. ;D

And having looked at the picture -- possibly from the text I'd assume some elk or moose-like creature.

Identifying features: larger than a deer; with a dark and shaggy neck and head.

Sorry, I wouldn't have gotten as far as the others. I was stuck on trying to imagine a deer with bull horns.  ::)

I read the 'shaggy,' just couldn't get past the bull horns adorning a deer's head.

Okay, I'm with you. Guess it was a bit of a stretch.

I'll go with this: -shaggy hide of the Zubr bull-

Skip, are you over-thinkng this?

Why couldn't you simply say, He rolled the shaggy hide and tied it over his saddle. Is the specific animal the hide came from germane to the scene or story at that point? Don't underestimate your reader's imagination.
I have a motto: when in doubt, go for the cheap laugh.

Um . . . I said buffalo, not wisent. A winset is just the specific name is all. On that note, if you thought few people would know wisent . . . zubr is even worse. It looks and sounds like something from science fiction.

But, I agree with Don. You're way over-thinking this. I like his example too.
