I agree about horses being expensive and cavalry were relatively few. In a large army, of over 5,000 men, cavalry probably made up less than 10% of the entire army. But in some of those medieval wars, the entire army was only 400-500 knights with no infantry at all. War was the sport of the nobility. If they did not want the peasants to come along, the infantry stayed home. Also, mobilizing infantry meant taking men off of the farms. Sometimes a medieval economy could not afford to lose so much manpower.

I suspect most medieval armies lived off the land, finding food along the route of march rather than drawing supplies along a line of supply. If you want to deny your enemy of his food supply, scorch the earth. Burn everything in his path and to either side.

Cavalry had to fight on flat, open ground to get the most out of a charge. If you want to put cavalry at a disadvantage, draw them into wooded hill country.

Not sure about Middle Ages stuff here, but the Spartans couldn't conquer all of ancient Greece because if all the warriors left home, the riff raff peasants would have revolted and many of them were slaves of sorts and needed the nobility to hang around and make sure they stayed peons or slaves.

Seems it would always be a problem with a large number of serfs/peasants/slaves/peons/etc. in relation to the numbers of those in control of the region. So if you have only nobility fighting, it would have to be close by and only for a very short time. Couldn't have them rampaging around the countryside for long or the home fires would be gone when they returned home.

A lot of the movies I watch are on TCM (Turner Classic Movies) in part because I enjoy many of the old movies. But also because they come up with one I've never heard of before, let alone seen.

Such was the case with Viking Queen a night or two ago. While I felt the 'story' itself could have used some work to make it more interesting, I kept watching because as I did so, I could help but thing the battle scenes, or at least parts of them, would fit well with your story.

One scene in particular, when the Druids knew (spies) the Roman army was going to be coming to take slaves. They also knew the route the army would take because it was one they seemed to favor.

So they planned ahead. Several trees, easily large enough to block the road way were prepared ahead of time. After the forward horseback soldiers had passed the key spot, the trees were felled, cutting them off from both the people intended for slavery and the small number of guards bring up the rear. It didn't win the war for them, but it won that battle and put a hurt on the Roman army.

here's a link about the movie:

Hey Miss Alice, I saw that movie the other night on TCM. Did you notice the druids were praying to Zeus.

I thought it was ironic beings how they were supposed to be anti-Roman anything. But yes, I was watching to see if I could gather ideas.

Miss Spell Chick- I love the training and discipline of the Spartans. I found out they fought amongst themselves, one city-state Vs. the other.

Yupper, and weren't Celtic-Gaul-Druids supposed to look to 'Mother-Earth' , Odin (Wodanaz or Woten), and Meili ?

I've been seeing a lot of the conquering peoples overwriting the histories of the conquered.

Yes, I noticed they were calling on Zues . . . there was several things that seemed "off" to me. Zues was one, The queen's 'battle gear' was another. When she rode off to fight she wore an abbreviated version of the armor of the Roman shoulders. No covering on her arms, a rather brief skirt and nothing to protect her legs. Yet she wore a helmet with a rather flamboyant plume.

Heck that's how they put butts in the seats. Guys had to go see that and the scene where they tied the girl up, striped her bare and whooped her. Pretty risque for films back then, and all the guys had to take a date so they didn't look like pervs.

Just watching Hero -- with Jet Li . . . the (ancient) Chinese are using some pretty groovy mega crossbow machines allowing multiple arrows in flight. That would save a lot of manpower if Matt could fashion one.

Another group of people Matt could get on side and use for infiltration/disguise/decoy purposes is the local monastery . . . monks tending their fields, going to prayer, wearing their hooded cloaks. :-\ :-\ :-\

mmmmmm...No.  ;D I don't want to involve any religion except for a splattering of Paganism. I'm taking quite a few liberties with the Pagan customs as it is. However, as long as I kiss a tree and say a prayer to the spirit of Bambi before I eat em, maybe I'll get a pass.  ;D
