FYI -- I got that assignment I didn't think I'd get because I didn't have the clips the magazine wanted.  :)

Here's how I did it, if anybody is interested:

--Good CV (this is a corporate travel magazine, sort of like an in-flight, and they want to see corporate things like a CV from their freelancers)
-- I sent them three of my best published stories, each with a different strength. One had a splash of humor and good photos. One was a glossy magazine layout. The third was the script to a radio piece to show them I can tell stories in a medium other than print. An eclectic portfolio is a good thing.

I didn't know exactly what the assignment would be or how much they'd pay. I just knew they were looking for someone living in my area. That was a good start.

Luck has a lot to do with it. Sometimes you can read between the lines of even a short email. I got the feeling this editor was on a tight deadline. That's to the freelancer's advantage if you have your foot in the door. If the editor doesn't have time to do a lot of searching, she'll take the path of least resistance, the freelancer who's in front of her as long as you show promise.

Okay, now I'm off to get to work. I have a tight deadline.  :)

Work hard. Believe. Take a chance.

My website is currently having a holiday, but will return like the $6,000,000 man.  Bigger, stronger, etc.

In the meantime, why not take pity on a starving author and visit my book sales page at http://stores.lulu.com/gyppo1

Thanks, guys. As usual, when it rains, it pours.

Deadline is tight, husband is on a biz trip, the baby is under the weather, and my elderly cat will probably have to be put to sleep today.  :-[
