ways of knowing
« on: July 20, 2006, 01:25:25 AM »
So many ways of knowing:
voices on the telephone,
a simple glancing over the shoulder,
slight graceful movements of the hand.
A smile, a laugh, a nod of understanding,
so much passing from one to one.
Even if there are others in the shadows,
saying a word, a sigh, a hint of sadness.
It is true we move on knowing … still
so many ways of knowing.
It is all a metaphor.

WB,

Yes!  It is very observant of you to notice the silent language that surrounds us, and often speaks to us in its own idiosyncratic way.  Many, I fear, are so cluttered with raw noise in their lives that they cannot hear the muffled cry of others, or see the child’s hand reaching for the stars.

You show a keen sensitivity to those unspoken gestures, Bill.  And I would suppose that is every good poet’s first requirement: the ability to see the soundless stream of life around him.  Very nice.  Thanks for sharing it with us.
