Words to a Page
« on: July 15, 2006, 08:52:16 AM »
I've noticed I seem to average 227 words to a page, been trying to adjust settings so I get 250, purely for ease of reconning.
- four per 1000.

I'm curious what do others get?

Also what do people write in?  I use Times New Roman, Double Spaced 14 point.

I tend to critique in a harsh manner. Please remember it is not personal, but how I prefer anyone critiqueing me to be. It is far more useful IMO.

Times New Roman, 12 point, double-spaced - 350 to a page unless it's heavy on the dialogue, according to a couple of samples I've just checked anyway.

Courier, 12 point, double spaced, will give you around 250 words per page.

I prefer Verdana, 10 points, when I'm writing. I usually go for 150% line-height.

Anyone know if agents/publishers have a preference?

I wouldn't know for sure, but I'm willing to bet some spacing would be nice to have.

An auto-paragraph spacing and line-height of at least 150 to 200%. I'm not entirely sure, but I believe that Times New Roman is generally accepted.

From what I can tell, the general ms form is Times New Roman, 10, double spaced, with 1 inch margins all around, and each page numbered -- usually upper right corner.  Oh, and text only on one side of the paper.

Many US agents who have websites with submission pages will specify what they prefer.  My experience is that if it looks too different from what they want, it puts them off.  Basically, if you want them -- give them what they want...to the letter.

Having said all that, I find Times New Roman to be hard to read with all those pesky little serf on the letters.  10 makes my eyes tire sooner.

I write in Tahoma 12, following all of the above protocol, except, I like the page number in the center of the bottom of the page.  I keep a "master copy" and adjust the codes at the beginning of the ms to fit the agent's preference when a partial or full is requested, but I don't overwrite my master.  For me, I use what I like, but give them what they like.

Having said all of that, I beat my brains out nabbing an agent, then after the honeymoon, I asked for a divorce...but the thing about cking their website still holds.

I use my software to do a word count.  I use WordPerfect, but as I remember, Word will also do a word count.  The software may count a few things a bit odd, but it is as accurate as using a formula to figure word count.

Hmmm....
Times New Roman, size 12, for me gives about umm.... 550 - 600 words.
Although it depends on the format of my writing.

Thanks all, and thank you Nadine for the in depth reply.

Guess I'll stick with what I have, and make sure I submit it in the format that they prefer. ;)
