Re Blogger & Adsense

Nick, would it be possible to open one of these bloggers and incorporate Adsense and use it as a way to write sequels. You know the sort of thing I mean? Each day giving part of a story, say 500 words, and ending the  story each week. Would that be allowed? And, do you think that would be viable for advertisers, therfore bringing in some welcome pennies?

I've had a look at Google's Blogger site, and It seems straight forward to do. The point is do you think it's worth it?

Hi Chillies

You could certainly do this. A blog is basically a personal website in diary format on which the blogger (i.e. you) regularly posts items. There is nothing to stop your postings being instalments of a story or novel. As long as your story doesn't breach Blogger's terms and conditions (e.g. it's not hardcore porn) they will have no objections to this.

You should also be able to get AdSense advertising on your blog, but don't expect to make much money from this. AdSense advertising is piped on to your site by Google, and you only get paid when someone clicks on an ad (which then opens the advertiser's page, of course).

The ads that appear on your page depend on the topic of your blog, which is automatically (though not always perfectly) detected by Google. Ads about some topics pay better than others. If you get ads about freelance writing, you will receive only a few cents a click (normally). If you get ads about car insurance, your ads will pay a bit more. So one tip might be to make your story about a car insurance or real estate (another highly paid topic) salesman  ;)

The other thing that affects your returns from AdSense is the number of visitors you get to your blog, and this is largely down to your own marketing efforts. Obviously if you get hundreds of visitors every day you will make more money than if you only get a handful.

So it's up to you really - you can certainly do it, but don't expect to earn more than a few dollars a month, unless your blog really takes off and develops a cult following. If I were you I would look at it as a bit of fun and a chance to publicise your work and get feedback on it, with any income from AdSense a welcome bonus.

Hope that helps!

Thanks Nick, I've already set a blog up and raring to go. Can you have more than one blog? I'm thinking of  having one for fiction and another on articles - perhaps DIY. This might bring in ads from Tool companies and the like. And if you can have more than one blog, can you call yourself different names so that they are both independent of one another?

Yes, you can start more than one blog from within your Blogger account. Just click on 'Create a Blog' within your Dashboard page.

The personal profile you create in Blogger will be displayed across all your blogs, however, so think carefully about what you put here. If you want to use a different identity for each blog, you might be able to do it by editing the template for each blog directly. Alternatively, you could simply open another Blogger account in another name (might be simpler!).

Good luck!
