Ahhh darn! I did get very confused.

I just made a submission to SQmagazine entitled 'The Curious Gift of Oscar Copeland'. Shall I re submit to the Story Quest?
My debut novel 'Life Eternal' is now available to buy on Amazon in both paperback and kindle.

Please search 'Aaron J Booth' on Amazon to find the product.

Just a reminder, that the second Story Quest Contest is open and requires submissions to be handed in by 31 October 2010 http://ifwgpublishing.weebly.com/story-quest-contest.html

SQ Magazine is being published this month - it is accepting manuscripts for the second edition: http://ifwgpublishing.weebly.com/sq-magazine.html

Finalists of the Story Quest Contest will be published in SQ Magazine, along with the winner. The winner will also have a novel or equivalent published by IFWG Publishing - this is likely to be last time this prize will be awarded - cash prizes next year. The winner of the first contest, Hunter Liguore, is having her short stories published in an anthology this year!

I recently read 'I am Legend' and just recieved Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's 'The Lost World' through the post. I can't help but notice they are considerably shorter than the majority of novels nowadays but still regarded as some of the finest works around (they top the reading list of several university creative writing courses).

So it got me wondering, do publishing houses go for novella lengths nowadays? I know of one that does but cannot speak for a wider range of houses. Does IFWG accept such length stories of speculative fiction?

Most publishers will not print a very short piece (compared to a novel), on its own. Some add short stories by the author to 'fatten' out the product. This does not mean it cannot be done - IFWG is willing as long as it has commercial value - ie it will sell. Note, however, that the revolution in digital publishing (which IFWG is a willing participant) means that a publishing house (and individuals, for that matter) can publish shorter pieces via Kindle, Nook etc.

Thank you for the speedy reply. I now have a wonderful idea planned for when I finish the novel I am working on :D

I think novella's should most certainly be brought back. It's a nice feeling to read a complete story in roughly 40-50k words..yet I do love 100k word novels as well! Gah, I am torn.

Hold your horses! Certainly around 50k is more a short novel and certainly is acceptable. There are plenty of short novels around, and it goes without saying that YA novels are often at that length. IFWG Publishing is working on novel that will, in all likelihood, settle at 54k. The Science Fiction Writers Association of America classifies novels as being over 40k (novelas 17,500 to 40k).

A quick reminder that the Story Quest Short Story Contest is well and truly open. This is the final round, for a while, where IFWG Publishing will work with the winning author to publish a novel or equivalent tome. A very big prize, considering that the last title we published was rated 4/5 by Paul Goat Allen, specfic reviewer for Barnes and Noble.  http://ifwgpublishing.weebly.com/story-quest-contest.html

Also, for you who are just interested in getting their story up in print, SQ Magazine is also open for submissions - http://ifwgpublishing.weebly.com/sq-magazine.html

cheers
