I still think the best way to travel is to jump in the air and let the earth pass under you. Just make sure you are clear of post, trees, buildings and mountains. At a 1000mph, that could hurt(not recommended on the east coast of any land mass).

I wonder, if you did this on the north or south pole, would you spin like a top?

Perhaps this should only be attempted exactly on The Equator where, presumably, you would just go straight up.

If God (or whoever you perceive her to be) had meant us to fly she would have given us wings. :-\

Cathy,
Dear Cathy. My darling Cathy. You know how Domenic is. I would spread my coat over a wet spot so you would not dirty you shoes. I would open a door for you and surrender my seat on the tram for you. I would pull your seat out and guide it in as you sit. I would pick flowers for you. I would treat you like the lady you are. But you know how Domenic is? SHE? Hmmmmmmm? Need I say more?

What's left of Cit's mind is wandering. :D

Flying isn't the part you should be afraid of, Xman.  It's the people in Security with the single-digit IQs that are truly terrifying.
I have a motto: when in doubt, go for the cheap laugh.

Well, folks, it's finally happening.

Exactly twelve hours from now, I'll be thundering down the runway into the wide blue yonder and....

*reaches for sick bag*

Er, sorry about that.

Anyway, thanks to everyone for their advice and I've taken them all on board....

*oh god, not again*

I'm off to bed now to have unpleasant dreams so I'll bid you all goodnight (and hopefully not 'goodbye').

If any of you on MWC pray, please start now.  ;D

Define the plane as the world and the rest of the world as a dark cupboard. Be glad you've escaped from the cupboard and marvel at the sight of herds of stewardesses charging majestically across the plains. It's all a matter of perspective. ;D

Seriously. Con yourself. It's the best way. Convince yourself you've got to the cinema or a themed restaurant. Close your eyes and create an imaginary world. Try to avoid sexual imagery though, it's too easy to get carried away.

I have a terrible fear of cable cars. I was forced into being in one a few years ago, and once on the damn thing, like planes, you can't just change your mind. I created a whole world inside my head, totally losing myself until I was able to get off the damned thing. Fortunately I only had to throw myself off a mountain on a couple of bits of wood to get down again otherwise I'd still be up on that mountain.

Good luck mate.

;D

lol Yup that should work. At least until the turbulence kicks in.

I love traveling but hate flying  ::) So view planes as a necessary evil. I guess I cant quite get over the fact that for 9 hours or so, my life is literally in the hands of another.

Yes I do have a sensible answer to your question.   There are various courses you can undertake by the airlines for people with phobias about flying and they will help you to overcome your fear.  Why not get in touch with the company you are flying with.

I wouldnt recommend any pills etc, just to remember that flying is far safer than driving a car. Once you are up there its actually very pleasing.   I never understood how it stays up there, but it does and now I travel all over the world, but I still get nervous about the flight and have a huge relief when we land.   Still, it's a thrilling experience and one I would not have missed.

;D You know what Superman said, Xerika, flying is still one of the safest forms of transportation. And the fastest. And turbulence isn't all that bad!

*throws a shoe at bobby digital's head*  :P

Pilots usually do their magic to right those things. I've been going through planes all my life and usually a turbulence happens most of the time but it's just like... being in a car. With big rocks on the ground. It always goes away afterwards, anyway. Heck I've been on a plane while there was a violent rain going about, and nothing serious happened.

Err- though I doubt that there would be violent rainstorms when you'll go in a plane. It only happened to me twice and all of them were very smooth flying.

I checked Wikipedia for treatments, too, and I thought that you might want to check it out.

Nothing like wikipedia!

;D ;D ;D Now look at Xerika! She's all pale and sweaty now...

All right. It's kind of like a carousel. A very interesting looking carousel which goes up and down and... I'm not helping, aren't I? It's not that scary, anyway  ;) Don't worry.
