  Recommend?

It's hilarious - laugh out loud funny in places.  Plus I've always romanticized the idea of hiking the ATR and this set me straight  ;D

Another Bill Bryson that I recommend is The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid  :D

I'm reading The Book Thief- Markus Zusak. A truly amazing book. It's about a girl named Liesel who finds she loves books and starts stealing them from Nazi book burnings'. It's really amazing and inspiring.

I'll second The Book Thief.  It's one of those special books that stays with you.

I have read The Book Thief so many times. I'll probably do it again.

I dare say it looks promising....I really need to broaden my library, nothing but Sci-fi(space operas) with the odd war book ::)

I would love to hear your opinion of Pratchet. I've been advised to read a bit of his work, for style. I haven't gotten around to it yet. Is there anything of his that you would particularly recommend?

You have to start with The Colour of Magic for the discworld series. It's not really children's fiction but you get the energetic imagination of Pratchett on every page. Other than the Discworld series, I am bowled over by Truckers, Diggers and Wings. This trilogy is a parody of society seen through the eyes of Nomes, a hidden race of tiny people living in a department store. It is hilarious, and should be compulsory reading for EVERYONE!

Excellent! I'll order all of those books off Amazon tonight. And add them to the (sigh) pile beside my bed.
