"A cynic is a man who, when he smells flowers, looks around for a coffin."
     - H. L. Mencken

Didn't make me so much stop as slow down and take a whiff.

"Listen; there's a hell of a good universe next door: let's go."

This didn't make me stop, but I thought it was worth including.

"To the literati who turn up their collective noses at the idea of such restrictions on the muse...every form has its restrictions and its rules. Sonnets, Haiku, Stage Plays...You either play by the rules or you don't get to play."

Many people hear voices when no-one is there. Some of them are called mad and are shut up in rooms where they stare at the walls all day. Others are called writers and they do pretty much the same thing.

"As to the adjective, when in doubt, strike it out."
                                                 -Mark Twain, Pudd'nhead Wilson, 1984

Who would've thought Twain had adjective issues too?
“We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year's Day.”

Many people will walk in and out of your life, but only true friends will leave footprints in your heart.

To handle yourself use your head; to handle others use your heart.

Anger is only one letter short of danger.

If someone betrays you once it is his fault; if he betrays you twice, it is your fault.

Great minds discuss idea's; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people.

He who loses money, loses much; he who loses a friend loses much more; he who loses faith, loses all.

Beautiful young people are accidents of nature, but beautiful old people are works of art.

Learn from the mistakes of others, you can't live long enough to make them all yourself......

There is no beginning or end. Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift, that's why they call it the present (unknown)

Anyone who understands that writing is a process and that depends as much on knowledge and judgement as it does on inspiration. There are no great authors, only great books.

"In me there dwells no greatness; save it be  some for-off touch/Of greatness to know well I am not great."

Carl Jung tells in one of his books of a conversation he had with a Native American chief who pointed out to him that in his perception most white people have  tense faces, staring eyes and a cruel demeanour. He said "They are always seeking something. What are they seeking ? The whites always want something. They are always uneasy and restless. We don't know what they want.We think they are mad."

How right he was. Above quote is from Eckhart Tolle book, the power of now.
"Do you not know, my son, with how little wisdom the world is governed?",

"Most people spend the greatest part of their time working to live, and what little freedom remains so fills them with fear that they seek out any and every means to be rid of it. What a thing our human destiny is!"
