Yes I got that part.
But here's where I get lost.

What makes them go on until the end?
Answer:the finger.

I think you'll need to explain it a bit.

Let's take it literally and say your finger on the keyboard.

But then it would be fingers, unless you're cursed with extremely slow typing and I'm sorry I brought it up.

Do people use more than one finger? I didn't know that.

In the electronic age, books, words and reading are not likely to remain sufficiently authoritative and central to knowledge to justify literature. - Alvin Kernan

Patti, I'd say he's most definitely a nutter. This borders on a nutty quote but I can understand the reasoning because it works for writing too sometimes.

"I'm working on a snow scene right now, and it's summer. It's hot, and I will get chilly. I'll have to turn on the heat. My wife walks in, and it's 95 degrees in the studio. I know it's nutty, but it's a projection you have where you step into the painting."
Thomas Kinkade

Ollie, the character never quits because the character is compelled by the writer. Right?

I think he is definately nuts. Especially considering that 90% of the internet is written and you have to be able to read to get anything out of it.

Here's a couple of quotes to cheer you up:
"To be a book-collector is to combine the worst characteristics of a dope fiend with those of a miser." - Robertson Davies

"A room without books is like a body without a soul." - Cicero
"I was born of writing. Before that, there was only a play of mirrors." - Jean Paul Sartre

"A room without books is like a body without a soul." - Cicero

Every room in my house has a soul then! Lots of them actually.

"He who sees the truth, let him proclaim it, without asking who is for it or who is against it."

This happened to me over the summer too.

True but there has to be a better reason, something that motivates them to go on until the very end, otherwise they're just obeying an author's whim, which wouldn't make them good characters.

Another nifty quote:
Any word that doesn't add to your story detracts from it.
