Quotes that make you stop
« on: November 17, 2007, 09:21:48 AM »
I found this quote - quite easily as my home page is Think Exist.

"I am very interested in the Universe - I am specialising in the Universe and all that surrounds it." - Peter Cook

Do you have a quote that tickles your funnybone? One that is pithy? Something that makes you pause and search for deeper meanings?

What sort of quotes do you find meaningful? Enjoyable? Quotable?

My non-fiction work is essays with added quotes so I look for tons of other people's words. Do you have any to share? Can you tell why they are worth sharing?

The above quote just made me smirk. I want to know everything, too.

I guess most people put quotes they like in their sig's.

As for your essay, I don't understand what you mean by 'words'.  You want to know if people have made up words?

Neologisms are nothing new. It is one of the ways we expand the language.

I love quotes. I love reading other people's succinct precise thoughts. I like witty quotes. I like philosophical quotes.

Not all quotes are by famous people. I liked something my son said and quoted it.

One of his asides is "He is a butter knife in a Ginsu world." I liked that.

Some quotes are funny and some thought provoking. Some quotes clarify a position and some are used for obfuscation. Some quotes are so famous that we don't even think of them as originally penned by one person.

There are games like Shakespeare or the Bible where you try to guess where a line came from.

Quotes are often, at least for me, a way to say something far better than I could have said it myself.

My essays are just that. 400-500 word essays on historical events happening on a specific date and then I look for quotes that enhance what I've written. They are either centered on the topic of my essay or they are quotes by the person in my essay.

I just wrote up Shays' Rebellion so my quotes were on democracy and taxation.
In a recent essay, I wrote about Napoleon's banishment to Elba. My quotes were all by Napoleon rather than about banishment or punishement or greed and power.

As the author, I get to make up the rules. That's fun.

"When a statesman forsakes his conscience for the sake of his public duties, he leads his country, by a short route, to chaos."  St. Thomas More

I first heard this over 4 decades ago and it still remains one of my favourites.  I often find it a pity to be so true in today's politicians.

"There's a fine line between genius and insanity. I have erased this line." -Oscar Levant

"Our society is run by insane people for insane objectives. I think we're being run by maniacs for maniacal ends and I think I'm liable to be put away as insane for expressing that. That's what's insane about it." -- John Lennon

"Outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend. Inside of a dog it's too dark to read." -Groucho Marx

A child’s life is like a piece of paper on which every passerby leaves a mark. -Chinese proverb

This quote not only makes me stop it scares me:
"Our enemies are innovative and resourceful - and so are we, they never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people - and neither do we." George W Bush at a Pentagon meeting, August 2004
"Do you not know, my son, with how little wisdom the world is governed?",

I love "Life of Brian"!

“-You can't just turn on creativity like a faucet. You have to be in the right mood.
-What mood is that?
-Last-minute panic.”

“People think it must be fun to be a super genius, but they don't realize how hard it is to put up with all the idiots in the world.”

-Calvin and Hobbes
Writing a book is a long, exhausting struggle, like a long bout of some painful illness. One would never undertake such a thing if one were not driven by some demon whom one can neither resist nor understand.
- George Orwell

I got this one in my Nanowrimo week three pep talk, from Neil Gaiman.
= = = = =
The last novel I wrote (it was ANANSI BOYS, in case you were wondering) when I got three-quarters of the way through I called my agent.  I told her how stupid I felt writing something no-one would ever want to read, how thin the characters were, how pointless the plot. I strongly suggested that I was ready to abandon this book and write something else instead, or perhaps I cou ld abandon the book and take up a new life as a landscape gardener, bank-robber, short-order cook or marine biologist. And instead of  sympathising or agreeing with me, or blasting me forward with a wave of enthusiasm---or even arguing with me---she simply said, suspiciously cheerfully, "Oh, you're at that part of the book, are you?"

I was shocked. "You mean I've done this before?"

"You don't remember?"

"Not really."

"Oh yes," she said. "You do this every time you write a novel. But so do all my other clients."

I didn't even get to feel unique in my despair.

So I put down the phone and drove down to the coffee house in which I was writing the book, filled my pen and carried on writing.

One word after another.

That's the only way that novels get written and, short of elves coming in the night and turning your jumbled notes in to Chapter Nine, it's the only way to do it.

So keep on keeping on. Write another word and then another.
= = = = =

I stopped and thought, that's what I'm doing right now.
I have to go, novel something or something.
Never make a decision standing up.
