Title: this or that
Post by: Amie on April 16, 2007, 08:45:59 AM
I just had this urge to post something in the coffee shop (you know how it is), and it was either this or a variant of "Modern Moral dilemmas" (which on reflection seemed trickier to pass on from one poster to the next, so...)

anyway, the rules are simple:  one person posts a choice of this thing or that, and the next says which they prefer and posts their own choice.

So, start fairly simple:  analogue or digital?

Title: Re: this or that
Post by: Amie on May 23, 2007, 01:56:47 PM
Cool.

Okay, the Earth is overtaken by aliens, and they tell you that they inhabit a world which is a relative utopia compared to Earth.  You have no objective evidence as to the merits of this planet, only their word, and yet you are inclined to trust them, just from a "feel" kind of basis...  they say that they can transport you to their idyll, on which you can spend the rest of your days (possibly being immortal for all you know, due to the lack of free-radical damage in their planetary system), but you can never come back.

do you stay or do you go?  (to the new planet that is)
Title: Re: this or that
Post by: Neil on May 23, 2007, 02:27:46 PM
Stay. I may be adventurous and like travel but a new planet could be mighty lonely without those I know and love. And besides there was a joke about a person who had just died being shown a view of heaven and hell on two computer screens. Heaven was peaceful and tranquil but in hell, everyone was laughing, drinking, playing and having a great time. This person chose hell - but when they arrived it was dire. Violent, warlike and everyone in fear.
When the person complained it was not like he had seen on the computer screen he was told he had been watching a screen saver!

Cat or dogs?
Title: Re: this or that
Post by: Amie on May 23, 2007, 02:56:13 PM
cats.  cleaner, easier to take care of, and there are some breeds that act just like dogs (mine plays fetch for example, and sleeps nestled into my arm every night)

but c'mon though - I gave a complex choice and we're back to cats and dogs?  are we not writers here?

how 'bout this?  You meet a minor deity - and he tells you the secret to eternal life.  Another minor deity pops along and says he's just tricking you, you'll end up like those people in Gulliver's Travels who never die, but just get more decrepit and senile with age, and bitterly hate their lives.  Do you choose everlasting life (given that the latter minor deity might be lying, 'cos he doesn't want humans to have his gift of eternal life) or mortality?

VW Beetle or Mini?
Title: Re: this or that
Post by: Neil on June 27, 2007, 05:00:29 PM
Ruth Rendell and Barbara Vine is one and the same, but under her own name Ruth Rendell tends to write the Wexford novels while under the Barbara Vine name she writes superb psychological mysteries. And in answer to a previous question, out of current living writers, she is the one I most admire. Her output and standard is truly superb and a great example.

But as for a car, I have great fondness for the mini.
