Title: Boy! am I dumb today
Post by: chillies on March 25, 2007, 02:38:17 PM
I've only just realised:

We have two members, one called Ellie and another called Allie.

You know this could confuse an idiot.

Does anyone else ever feel dumb about anything. Please think hard I don't like being singled out as the only idiot. Perhaps we could start a club.

Idiocy is only a problem when it becomes your default setting ;-)

We all have our moments...

Hi Chillies..this is ellie speaking from 'Idiots Unite' ;D

Ive had moments in recent times, where Ive forgotten people's names!

On holiday in Sept last year..I was browsing in a large gift shop when a couple came up to me,calling my name. My mind went blank (nothing unusual there...)I remembered their faces but the names had gone! But I managed to steer myself through it somehow and as they left I simply said,
" yeah nice seeing you and take care" (and to myself "whoever you are!" ;D)

and I get 'lost' too! my youngest reckons I ought to wear a label like Paddington Bear, with my name & address on! ;D.... or its the 'dumb blonde' remark ::)
 ;)

We are all born with a large wad of 'dumb' credit.  It accumulates interest.  Everything is OK as long as you don't spend all your 'dumb' at once.  You don't get to be a complete idiot until you are overdrawn.  ;D

If you think getting Ellie & Allie mixed up is dumb, then this must be really dumb. There's a user called "oliver" and I read one of his posts and thought "I didn't write that?" Of course I didn't because my username isn't "oliver"

Everyone's an idiot as some time. You'd have no shortages of members for an idiots' club. As for names, just don't say the person's name. Just say 'erm...' and they will fill in the name. I don't feel offended at all if someone has forgotten my name.Or you could be one of those people who calls everyone 'love' or 'darling.' I don't know if that helps in this forum as you don't have faces to associate Allie and Ellie with.

i think life does it for you.  A few knocks and near misses generally trips the mental switches the right way.  But I suspect the idiot programming still runs deep in the background, like one of those virues which are triggered on a certain date.  In this case certain stimuli like as a gorgeous member of the opposite sex, a shortage or indeed overdose of money or alcohol...  It's a lifelong risk, and sometimes the best things in life stem from a momentary idiocy ;-)

With this in mind perhaps we should nurture our Inner Idiot, but keep him/her on a tight rein ;-)

Give your Inner idiot a cookie, hold his/her hand and state very clearly "You can go in any room in my brain except that one." Which of course is the first room he goes in, and it's a something [sorry, I was think of something else and forgot]

Hi from a newbie! :-)

Dear friend,

I'm new to the forum and I must confess I really enjoy to
be part of this community!

Few days ago it's daunted on me to use my real name as a user name.
All my friends call me briefly "ellie".

But I didn't use it here. :-)

I have a favorite quote but can't remember who told this:
"Great acts are made up of small deeds."
Pretty cool! :-)

Welcome, Elista
People who are are at that falling in love stage with someone new are prone to idiot acts such as:  forgetting to answer their friends' calls, thinking their new partner is 'nice' and perfect. It feels fantastic and dreamy but often leads to such acts as getting married.
Yes, it might be a good idea to nurture the inner idiot but keep him on a tight rein and not be overly sensible.

Ps. I just looked at a post that was directed at Lin and thought 'why is she telling me that?'

Hey gang, I entitled it 'Boy! am I dumb today' because it was a line Stan Laurel used. Oliver Hardy's reply was 'Today?' implying he was always dumb.

The last four digits of my phone number used to be 3862. My daughter and her friends figured out that 3862 spelled dumb. After that, the number was easy for people to remember.

I thought X-Writer, at first, was my ex.  :o

I thought Fiona really looked like Dido.

I wouldn't worry Leigh, I think it's fairly well documented on here why I won the 'International Numbty of the year' award back in 1989/1990. And nothing has changed, I still suffer from the same problem I had back then. I think I always will. :-\

I, too thought Fiona looked like Dido, then just a look-alike. At least these dumb things we think and do make great entertainment later when we've stopped blushing. So something good comes out of our default setting. I've gone to town on the bus wearing 2 different style shoes. I only noticed on the way home while I was sitting at the front at those high seats that face each other. I think this may belong in the Embarrassing Moment thread. I think I'll write a list of embarrassing and dumb things I've done and said. They're bound to be enough to make a book. This is after all, a writers circle.

Chillies, at least you don't have to worry about people getting confused with anyone called Willies. :)

And Lynn's story about her telephone number was interesting, wanting me to rush off and translate mine into words. But I don't think that makes it easy to remember, because then you have to start counting on your fingers to find the letter that equals the number.

Elitsa, one of my favourite mottoes is 'The longest journey starts with a single step,' which is similar to yours.

I'm dumb at arithmetic particularly, and applied geometry. For some reason other areas of maths are okay (or were in school, can't say about now).

I'm not sure wether this should be here or on most embarrising moments.

last night I was alone down stairs the children in bed and I thought I heard a noise out in the back garden. The cats were both in and then the dog perked his ears up so i decided to go have a look. (The dog wouldn't come with me. Coward.) I crept into the kitchen keeping low so as not to be seen through the window as I hadn't closed the blind and the light was on.
Kneeling on the floor by the sink I slowly stood up and nearly s**t myself to find someone stareing right back at me, then I realised it was my reflection.

;D I know that feeling, Charlie! In the warehouse office where I work, in one wall is a window looking out on to the warehouse. Next to this is a mirror, and then the door. I've lost count of the number of times I've stopped as I was leaving, to wait for the person I saw through the 'window' to come in...

OK get this; I have a few tabs open in my browser one is the thread for "Ruapehu" and Leigh has asked about the legend.  So I go and Google "Ruapehu" + "Ledgend" to find the text.  I start clicking through the list, get to one link and my Ruapehu poem comes to the front.  I go back to the Google listing and try again.  Dam browser brings up my poem again.  Bloody thing.  What's wrong with it?

Then I check the Google link: it's to the MWC page with my poem on it.  (hits head with palm).

That was a very kind and noble thing to do. Not many people appreciate just how low a CD case's self esteem can sink whilst it is empty.  Did you buy it an ice-cream?

Title: Re: Boy! am I dumb today
Post by: Lina on April 03, 2007, 07:11:32 PM
No. It didn't deserve it as it should not have been separated from its CD. It didn't deserve a holiday either.
Title: Re: Boy! am I dumb today
Post by: Gyppo on April 03, 2007, 07:34:58 PM
But CDs are notorious wanderers.  It's the discs which desert the cases, not not vice-versa.  Particularly if drink is involved.  All recordable media is like this with the one notable exception of computer hard drives, and the only reason they don't migrate between computer cases is that they are generally screwed firmly in place.  When a hard drive 'barbecues' itself it's because it's been consumed by the red heat of thwarted wanderlust.

I have had discs and old vinyl records move to houses in other counties ;-)

Look at the evidence...  Even blank CDs - especially if bought in bulk - are securely trapped on a 'spindle'.

Coincidence?  I think not.

The question now?  Am I being dumb writing this?  Or have I answered one of the great mysteries of the universe?

I don't know but I want to know why socks are such wanderers when you put them in the wash. They seem to just erase themselves from existence.
Title: Re: Boy! am I dumb today
Post by: Gyppo on April 03, 2007, 08:19:46 PM
Terry Pratchett claims there is a mysterious being/entity called 'Eater of Socks' who lives in all washing machines.  He may be right.

On the other hand I did appliance repair for a short while and it is amazing what can sometimes find its way through into the filter or even the waste pipe.  Stuff which the laws of physics (as we know them) would tell you was impossible.  Never found a sock in a filter though ;-)  Coins, safety pins, bra wires, bits of a broken ballpoint pen, a well mulched bit of paper which was probably once a banknote, and various anonymous objects which really didn't encourage close examination.

Gyppo, isn't there some kind of 'space' that connects all washing machines, in which the Eater of Socks wanders? I think it's similar to 'L' space that connects all Libraries, and in which it would be very dumb to use the 'M' word.

Dave.

If there is an eater of socks it must live near the pump or at least enter the washing machine via the pump because when my washing machine broke that is where the repair man found one of my new born sons tiny little socks preventing the pump from being able to turn.

Needless to say I've never done anything really dumb, but I had a secretary once who watched me replace a bottle of water in our water cooler. Once inverted, and after a few seconds of glugging, the water found it's new level in the bottle. She exclaimed: "Bloody rip off! Somehow they make it look full when it's the right way up, but when it's on the cooler you can see it isn't!"

Guess the colour of her hair and size of her thrupenny bits.

One of the dumbest things I ever heard was at a bikers party.
There were two blokes in the club, both called Dave. One of the Daves was married to a girl called Julie. Anyway Dave and Julie were chatting, and drinking away, when someone came in and said that Dave had crashed his bike.
Julie grabbed Dave and shouted, " Oh no, not my Dave," and feinted.
She woke up in her husbands arms (yes Daves) with a very silly grin on her face.

Oh yeah, Dave2 was fine as well.

My mum's a classic for being dumb. One day she got in my dad's car looked at the clock "Is that all the time is?"

"No," said dad "I have just not changed the time since the clocks went Forward."

"Great now when they go back it will be two hours slow."

"Or I could just leave it as it is." He said with a great level of patients.

I had to post this here.

Today I was listening to a tape [Buddy Holly if anyone is interested] and I turned it around to listen to the next side. I continued posting until I thought, "didn't I just put some music on." I looked, it was playing, no sound coming out. So I thought something was wrong, stopped it and had look, fine. Put it back in, still nothing. So I looked again, no problem. Turned it on again, nothing. So I was going crazy, what's going on, I'm just staring at this CD player.
Can you guess what was wrong?
