Title: Just found a baby squirrel...please help
Post by: sugy on November 06, 2006, 07:37:46 AM
Hi, My daughter just found an abandoned or strayed baby squirrel on the stairs to our house. I picked him(?) up and brought him home. Now, I don't know how I should take good care of him. That is why I have come to the best place, MWC for help and suggestions...

what to feed, what kind of bedding, the temperature, etc.,.  Please help.

Is he hurt? if so call a vet.  But if not then it's probably best off giving him a drink of water and sending him on his way.

First of all, place it in a metal cage instead of a cardboard box, before it chews its way out and ransacks the place!

Couple of wildlife websites for info:

Thank you stupot. He is not hurt, but am definitely not sending him on his way as he looks too fragile and too small to find his way. Maybe I'll send him when he is strong on his own feet.

Naomi, thank you for those websites info. I will check them out. I have put him in a big plastic tub( a thick one) and I think he cannot jump out of it nor can he chew it out. But, that was a very good input from your side, or else I would have missed that point totally(the chewing part!) :-[

They're not called 'tree-rats' for nothing sugy,  ;D
Would a paste of ground almonds and peanuts be suitable? If it's not old enough to be weaned it's not going to survive. And I remember reading somewhere that very young animals only wee when the mother licks that area.  :P
Rather you than me sugy  :D

If it is too young to wee, rum it's bum with a warm , wet towel. This is what you do with pups if mum rejects them.

Wow, that was all very helpful, thank you Naomi, DwWin, Go.dot and candy.
Well, I checked out the websites mentioned and I learnt quite a bit. Though quite a few pages talked about finding a rehabilitator, I don't think it is possible here. I am sure they will simply ask me let him go outside my house, just like that! so, I'll have to do something to make him a little stronger before I let him go.

Naomi, that was a scary thought until I thought of my husband doing his bit. ;) :P

Candy, that saved my husband too! ;D Well, I must say that it sounded a lot like a rhyming poetry...rum,bum,mum! Thanks.

Might I suggest skinning it and marinating it in BBQ sauce before shoving the spit up its...

Nah, just kidding.  Hope it had a happy ending.

Hi Louise, he(decided to let him be a he!!!) seems to be showing good signs. Last evening when we found him, he was very weak. This morning, I saw him moving around and grooming himself. Hopefully he should start playing soon enough.

Hey sugy

I'm no expert but I think that giving it over to the RSPCA will greatly increase it chances of survival (I had the similar situation with a sparrow during the summer.) They'll take good care of it and can even update you on its progress.  ;D

Hi Candy, the squirrel(my daughter has named him 'Nuts') is doing well. kept munching on a raisin for most part of the day and he still hasn't finished it! But, he is much more active today. I followed a few things from the websites mentioned above and rolled up a piece of cloth and he snuggles inside whenever he wants to sleep. He is fast asleep now.

Hi Bobby Digital, thanks for the concern. I would love to hand him over, but I live in a place where all these haven't really taken off...even to find a Vet who would treat an animal other than a dog or cow, seems almost impossible. So, here I am...a foster mom! ;D

For those interested...

The squirrel is doing fine. He has become pretty active. I have been feeding him diluted cow's milk (though one of the websites warned against it, I just couldn't find any other alternative) and fruits. I feed him milk using a medicine dropper.

I try to play with him whenever I find the time. Initially he was scared and hesitant. Now, he has no problem climbing up my hand. Sometimes he sprawls on my palm and enjoys the rub I give him! He is turning out to be a good pet. But, I know I'll have to let him go sometime. A few more days of nursing and I am sure he will want to go and explore the world.

Candy, thankfully he did his small job without us using a wet towel. ;D

Thank you all for being helpful.

 :)

They may be concerned that it is lactose intolerant - in which case it'll get the runs. If that happens you could try a milk subsitiute like Soya Milk or Oat Supreme - usually found in the UHT milk section of the supermarket.

Or, check your local pet supply shop.  They probably have a powder formula (add water) for wild babies.

Hi,
How's it doing. If it appears listless mix a small amount of glucose in warm water and drip it into its mouth. I have rehabilitated quite a few different wild animals and although you may want to cuddle it, try not to. If you plan to release it when its old enough, you dont want it to think human's are friendly (cos most of them are not).

I raised a baby pigeon(called Percy!) i released him but he was attacked by a cat, luckily he came back to my bird table and I took him in again. He is now living in the wild but he comes back twice a day to feed. I know most people think pigeons are vermin but he deserved to be given a chance.

Keep us up to date with the squirell.

Oh regarding the milk, you can buy dogs milk from most pet shops. Its called lactade and will be much better for the squirell

Thank you Naomi, Country4Girl, Carrie and Bob14bob for your concern and inputs. I finally managed to get a good picture of him to put here. Here he is...on my hand.

So far, so good! He is coping up well. Enjoys apples.

Now, he has begun to explore the room. He has been moved into another smaller box and he uses the big tub as his bathroom! :D Clever, I should say!

If you mean a louder CONGRATULATION, you've got it kid.

You are doing a fantastic job of caring for this little guy.  Wild babies are so difficult to raise by hand.

Really?  Where?

I've got a yard full of them.  They dig in my flowers, keep me awake at night holding races on the roof and in general, work hard at making a pest of themselfs.

Have to admit they also supply moments of enjoyment as I watch them chase each other up, down and all around the trees.  Not to mention when they sit just out of reach of the dogs or cat on the trunk of a tree, waving their tail as if to tempt, entice an attach.  At the first sign of attach they are off like a shot of course.  ;)

A TV program over here did a taste test on squirrels recently (Gordon Ramsay if you've seen him on Hell's Kitchen over there). Apparently they're quite nice :)

Doing very well, thank you Candy, for asking. :)

He's out of the tub, into a small box(bed) , otherwise he has got the whole room to himself. He loves to sun himself hanging onto the window mesh! And he loves going up and down the curtains!
